Music is an important part of cultures around the world. In English, you can see its influence in many idioms native speakers use every day.

This time, we'll introduce 16 music-related expressions that are useful in casual chats with friends and even in formal business settings. Let's begin! 🎵

English Music Idioms

Good note / Bad note

The very beginning and end of an interaction can have a big influence on our overall feelings. In English, fluent speakers often compare these moments to the first and last notes of a song.

Jesse wanted to start her new job on a good note, so she brought doughnuts for her co-workers.

The meeting ended on a bad note when the negotiations failed.

March to the beat of one's own drum

Some people choose to do things differently than others. Their uniqueness may come from their attitude, their fashion or their way of thinking.

We can describe people like this by saying they "march to the beat of their own drum."

I admire Jane for marching to the beat of her own drum. She's very confident and doesn't mind standing out.

Sing a different tune

This expression is used when someone changes their mind about something — as if they're switching from one song (or tune) to a different one.

This is often said sarcastically or as a warning.

You're not bringing a jacket? It's warm now, but you'll be singing a different tune when the sun goes down.

Get into the rhythm

Musicians often struggle to play a song they've never played before. In a similar way, when trying a new activity, you may not understand how to do it correctly at first.

If you keep trying, however, you'll eventually "get into the rhythm," when you're doing it comfortably and naturally.

It took me a little while to get into the rhythm at my new job, but now I feel quite comfortable.

It's also common to say "get into a rhythm."

Once my teammates and I got into a rhythm, we were able to work very quickly.

Music to one's ears

If you hear some news that makes you very happy, you can compare it to the feeling of hearing music that you enjoy.

Hearing that I didn't have to go to the office tomorrow was like music to my ears!

Tone-deaf

Someone who's tone-deaf is unable to clearly understand small differences between musical notes. That results in music that's not so nice to listen to!

But outside of music, you can describe people and their actions as "tone-deaf" if they're not sensitive or appropriate for a situation.

Johnson's joking during the important business meeting was very tone-deaf.

To the tune of ~

This idiom is a creative way to emphasize a specific number or amount.

Our charity campaign received donations to the tune of $50,000. We can use that money to help a lot of people!

One-man band

Bands consist of various members who each play different instruments or have specific roles.

But in general conversations, a "one-man band" is someone who can do many tasks without help from others — just like a musician who can play every instrument on their own.

Daisuke is a one-man band; he programmed the game, made all of the art, and even wrote the music himself. Amazing!

Without skipping a beat

If someone can keep doing an activity smoothly even if there's a problem or distraction, it's just like a musician who can maintain the rhythm of a song regardless of what's happening around them.

The Covid pandemic had a negative effect on many businesses, but we were able to continue without skipping a beat.

One-hit wonder

A "one-hit wonder" is an artist who has one very popular song — but only one.

In a similar way, an organization or individual with just one successful product or service can be described with the same term.

Steve showed everyone that he wasn't a one-hit wonder when he continued to release successful products throughout his career.

Face the music

When you "face the music," you accept criticism or punishment for a mistake or poor performance.

The students were forced to face the music when the teachers discovered they were cheating.

Play something by ear

Many musicians play by reading musical notes that have been written down. However, some people can play songs just by listening to them. We say that those musicians can "play by ear."

In daily conversations, "playing something by ear" means doing an activity without a plan or preparation.

I don't know what I'm doing this weekend; I'm just going to play it by ear.

Toot one's own horn

"Toot" is a casual verb that describes making a short sound on an instrument like a trumpet or saxophone. But in casual conversations, "tooting your own horn" means bragging or talking about yourself with too much confidence.

Carl loves to toot his own horn about how much money he makes.

This idiom is often used before someone makes a positive comment about themself in order to reduce the feeling of overconfidence.

I don't mean to toot my own horn, but this pasta I made is delicious!

Play second fiddle

Fiddles are violins, and in an orchestra, the second fiddle supports the first, or main, violin.

Outside of music, this idiom suggests that one person is less important than someone else. Notice that you need "to" to refer to another person.

Jake was tired of playing second fiddle to Max, so he left to start his own group.

Sound like a broken record

If a vinyl record is damaged, it may repeat the same part of a song over and over until the needle is moved to a different section.

In the same way, we say that someone "sounds like a broken record" if they say the same thing often.

A

You need a haircut.

B

You've told me three times already. You sound like a broken record!

Strike a chord

If something "strikes a chord" with you, you understand and feel it very deeply.

I didn't expect to like this book, but it really struck a chord with me.

Some Christmas songs have become classics that get lots of plays in stores and on the radio. But modern musicians continue to write fresh holiday songs every year.

This time, we'll highlight 10 modern Christmas songs that are great for English learners. We've tried to pick songs in a variety of styles and with a variety of moods. Check them out and you might discover a new favorite!

10 Great Christmas Songs You Might Not Know

Norah Jones - Christmas Calling (Jolly Jones) (2021)

The lyrics to this song express the happy feelings that come from simply spending the holiday with the people you love.

And the friends

Who feel like family

Well, they're secret angles holding me

Straight No Chaser - Text Me Merry Christmas (2014)

We can't always be with the people we love during the holiday season. However, even a small message can make us feel connected and cared for. That's what this song is all about — just make sure that your phone is charged!

You don't have to add much to it

One smiley face will do

Baby, text me Merry Christmas

Cause I'm missing kissing you

Colbie Caillat - Christmas in the Sand (2012)

You might imagine a "winter wonderland" of snow for Christmas, but have you ever celebrated December 25th in a warm place? What would Christmas on the beach be like? Listen to this song to get an idea. 🏄

But I saw Santa in his bathing suit

Trying to catch a wave

But he tried too soon

He laughed so hard

That he could barely breathe

And washed up next to me

Lil Jon - All I Really Want for Christmas (ft. Kool-Aid Man) (2018)

This one is a special collaboration!

Lil Jon is a rapper and producer known for his energetic club music. Kool-Aid Man, however, isn’t a musician at all; he's a mascot for Kool-Aid, a drink popular with kids.

Kool-Aid Man is also famous for shouting his catchphrase (“Oh yeah!”) while smashing through walls, which you can see in the video! 💥

Everybody in here VIP

Old Saint Nick, that's the MC

Gotta see him turnt on some old CDs

Playin' all your favorite songs from A to Z

"Mistletoe" is a popular word in Christmas songs. It’s a kind of plant that produces berries in the winter. Some western cultures have a special tradition with mistletoe: When two people stand underneath it together, they must kiss!

The animated movie KPop Demon Hunters became a hit shortly after it was released on Netflix in June 2025. It's a story about a group of singers who fight against an evil threat to their world.

However, one of the movie's biggest songs is by the film's villains — a group called the Saja Boys. Although they look normal at first, the Saja Boys eventually reveal their true identities while performing a song called "Your Idol."

This time, we'll look at some of the English expressions and idioms you can find in the lyrics to this popular song.

What's an Idol?

First, let's explain what an "idol" is. Although it's common when talking about entertainers, especially from places like Korea and Japan, an idol is anyone (or anything) that is greatly loved and admired.

My dad was my idol growing up.

You can also say "idolize," which is the verb form.

My little sister idolizes Naomi Osaka.

But this word originally had a more negative meaning: "false god," or something that is worshipped or praised that shouldn't be.

This meaning often referred to things like statues or other objects that people believed to have supernatural power. Which meaning do you think fits for this song?

What Do the Lyrics Mean?

Let's take a look at some lyrics that contain useful English for learners. Note that we're only looking at the English lyrics, not the words in Korean!

Keeping you in check

Keeping you obsessed

If you have someone or something "in check," you have control over them or it.

Sarah was having trouble keeping her energetic kids in check.

I'm on a tight budget, so I'm keeping my spending in check.

Someone who is "obsessed" is interested in something so much that it's unusual — and often unhealthy. Although it's often used casually, the original meaning has a serious nuance.

Since my last doctor's visit, I've been obsessed with only eating healthy foods.

Jake is obsessed with visiting France; he talks about it all the time.

We've written about "obsessed" before here.

Anytime it hurts

Play another verse

I can be your sanctuary

A "sanctuary" is a safe place. Sometimes it refers to religious places like churches, but you might also hear "animal sanctuary," where animals can be protected.

And in the US, there are "sanctuary cities," places where people who are in the country illegally can be safe from punishment. However, in 2025, these cities have been threatened by the policies of President Donald Trump.

Sanctuaries aren't always physical places, though. In the song, the Saja Boys say that they are sanctuaries for their fans. Here are some more examples of it being used figuratively:

Music is my sanctuary. No matter what's happening in my life, listening to my favorite songs relaxes me.

Her childhood was difficult, but writing was her sanctuary. That's why she became an author.

Know I'm the only one right now

I will love you more when it all burns down

"All burns down" is a casual idiom that refers to losing everything, like a house destroyed by fire.

That one major mistake is what caused everything to burn down.

More than power

More than gold

Yeah, you gave me your heart

Now I'm here for your soul

When you "give someone your heart," you're giving them your love, attention and admiration. This phrase often appears in love songs, but it's not common in daily conversations.

Since the Saja Boys are a popular K-pop group, they have many fans who've given them their hearts. But as the singer says, he also wants their souls — and this is a clue into the group's true nature.

Related article: More Than Romance: 14 English Idioms Related to the Heart

I'm the only one who'll love your sins

Feel the way my voice gets underneath your skin

Something that "gets under your skin" has a big effect on you, either positively or negatively.

When used positively, it means you develop an appreciation for — or obsession with — something.

We've only just met, but Jane has really gotten under my skin. I'm going to ask her out.

I didn't like it at first, but that song has gotten under my skin. I hum it all the time now.

When used negatively, it means something annoys you or makes you feel uncomfortable.

Her high-pitched voice really gets under my skin. I hate it!

Listen 'cause I'm

Preaching to the choir

Can I get the mic a little higher?

"Preaching" is giving a religious speech, usually in order to change people's thinking or convince them to do something.

A choir is a group of people who sing, often at religious events in support of a preacher.

So if you're "preaching to the choir," you're trying to convince someone who already believes what you have to say.

A

Chicago-style pizza is the best kind of pizza!

Since the Saja Boys are singing to their biggest fans (people who know and love them) they're "preaching to the choir."

Now we running wild

Yeah, I'm all you need

I'mma be your idol

"Running wild" means acting uncontrollably or without restrictions.

I let my kids run wild in the big park.

You can do whatever you want, so let your imagination run wild.

"I'mma" is simply a shorter, very casual way to say "I'm gonna" or "I'm going to."

I'm your idol

Thank you for the pain

'Cause it got me going viral

Something "goes viral" when it spreads or becomes popular very quickly, especially on social media.

In 2024, a baby hippo from Thailand named Moo Deng went viral.

From older fans to younger listeners who grew up with digital music, music lovers have made vinyl records more popular now than they've been in many years.

If you're interested in starting your own collection, there is some special vocabulary you should know. From the records themselves to words you'll hear in stores or see online, this article will explain some basic English for vinyl collectors.

English Vocabulary for Vinyl Records

Vinyl

Let's start at the very beginning. "Vinyl" is short for "polyvinyl chloride," the material used to make records. It's an uncountable term, so it should never have an "s." Use it to talk about many records or an unknown amount.

Sasha is a DJ, so she has a lot of vinyl.

Do you sell vinyl here or just CDs?

I've been collecting vinyl for almost 10 years.

Record(s)

"Record" is countable, so you can use it to refer to one or many pieces.

Sasha's a DJ, so she has a lot of records.

I've been collecting records for almost 10 years.

What's your favorite record?

You can also say "vinyl record."

This store specializes in books and vinyl records.

Wax

This slang term for vinyl records likely comes from the fact that phonograph cylinders, the earliest recording medium, were made of wax.

Like "vinyl," "wax" is uncountable.

We're going hunting for wax today. Do you know any good stores around here?

I'm planning on buying a lot of wax during my trip.

Note: This term is only common among record enthusiasts, not the general public!

Equipment and Types of Records

Turntable

Sometimes called "record players," turntables are the machines that are used to play records.

Most turntables include a special switch for adjusting the RPM, or "revolutions per minute." This determines how many times the turntable spins a record in one minute.

LP

LP is short for "long-player." LPs are complete albums that usually have between 8 and 12 songs.

12-inch

12-inch records got their name because they're 12 inches in diameter.

Although they're the same size as LPs, 12-inches usually only contain two or three songs. These shorter records, sometimes called "singles," were used to promote albums in the time before the digital era.

45 / 7-inch

7-inch records are seven inches in diameter and usually only have one song per side.

7-inches are also called "45s" (forty-fives) because they're usually played on a turntable's 45 RPM setting.

Picture disc

As you can guess from the name, picture discs are records with pictures on them! These are usually more popular for displaying than for listening to.

Variant

A popular trend in recent years is for records to have several different versions, called "variants," available for sale. Although the music is the same, the color of a variant's disc or the design of its packaging may be different.

Record Condition

Part of the fun of collecting records is searching for good — or at least interesting — music from the past. That means looking through lots of used records.

You'll want to check the condition of used records carefully before buying them. In physical stores and online, it's common to see record conditions described with a system of letters called "grades." Let's take a look at what they mean.

Grade

Meaning

P

Poor

F

Fair

G

Good

VG

Very Good

NM

Near Mint

M

Mint

When talking about any kind of collectible item, "mint" means "perfect condition." Lower grades, such as P, F and G mean the record has problems like scratches, scuffs (light marks) or some other kind of damage.

Remember that sometimes a record and its outside cover, called a "sleeve," will have separate grades.

Other Useful Vocabulary

Here are some other common terms you should know when shopping for records.

Sealed

A sealed record is in its original plastic wrapping (sometimes called "shrink wrap") and has never been opened.

I found a bunch of sealed records from the 1960s in my grandparents' closet.

Ding

"Dings" refer to damage on the corners of record sleeves due to being dropped or bumped against other objects.

This record is near mint except for some dings on the sleeve.

Warp

Warped records are bent slightly because of exposure to too much pressure, water or heat. As a result, they may not play properly when placed on a turntable.

The basement was flooded, so a lot of these records are warped from water damage.

Static

Static is a hissing noise you can sometimes hear on records as well as on weak radio or television signals. It's most common on records that aren't in good condition.

Instead of the cleaner sound of CDs and digital audio files, some people actually prefer the sound of static that is associated with vinyl. However, most people agree that too much static is not good.

I love a little static on my records. It gives them a warm sound that I don't get from streaming.

Common Expressions for Record Shopping

Original pressing / Reissue

Each set of a record that is manufactured is called a "pressing." Popular records may have many pressings over the years, sometimes from different countries.

This record's original pressing is from the US, but there are also Canadian, UK and Japanese pressings.

When a record is manufactured and sold again, we say it has been "reissued."

Collectors were happy to hear that the rare record would be reissued next month.

A reissued record is called a "reissue."

Reissues of classic records are often cheaper than original pressings.

Dig

New records are easy to find in clean, organized stores. However, many old, used records are found in places most people don't visit often, like garages, attics and flea markets.

Because searching these spaces is often difficult or inconvenient, record collectors call it "digging," the same word we use to describe searching for something deep underground.

We spent all day digging. My money's gone, but I've got some great new music!

People who hunt for records are called "diggers" or "crate diggers," referring to the milk crates that records are often kept in.

This market is a popular place for crate diggers.

Haul

"Haul" is a verb that means "to pull something heavy along the ground." But in its noun form, it refers to items you were able to find during a shopping trip.

A

I got these vintage jazz and funk records at the flea market today for only $11 total.

B

That's a pretty good haul!

This term isn't limited to only record fans; it's common among people who collect all types of things.

Holy grail

The Holy Grail is a cup that Christians believe was used by Jesus Christ. In casual conversations, however, a holy grail (or sometimes just "grail") is a very rare and valuable item.

There are only a few copies of this record, so it's a holy grail for many collectors.

White whale

Similar to a holy grail, a "white whale" is an item that's very difficult to find. This term comes from the famous 1851 novel Moby-Dick by American author Herman Melville. In the story, a sea captain is determined to find and kill a large, white whale that he had seen once before.

Unlike a holy grail, which is something many people want, a white whale usually has more personal importance; one person's white whale may be very different than someone else's.

I found my white whale for an incredible price at a garage sale last week. I couldn't believe it!

Wrap-up

Modern technology has made enjoying music more convenient than ever, but there is a special charm to vinyl records that more people around the world are discovering.

Unlike Christmas, there isn't much popular music about Valentine's Day. However, while Christmas songs are usually only heard at the end of the year, songs about love are popular all year long.

But not everyone enjoys Valentine's Day. In fact, many musicians have made songs about the negative sides of love. Some of these anti-love songs have even become big hits around the world.

Let’s take a closer look at the lyrics to these songs to see ways to express heartbreak and other feelings about the darker side of romance in English.

Anti-Valentine's Day Songs

“Caught Out There” - Kelis

Have you ever been so angry with someone that you just wanted to scream? Kelis has!

This song, released in 1999, is about a woman who has caught her partner cheating with someone else.

Although she sounds calm during the verses, during the famous chorus, she simply yells to let out her anger.

Last year, Valentine’s Day

You would spoil me and say

“Babe, I love you, love you”

(Yo, he’s lying)

“Babe, I swear”

When you "spoil" someone, you are doing too many nice things for them. Although its original meaning is negative, it’s usually positive when talking about close relationships.

His grandparents always spoil him with birthday gifts every year.

“Tainted Love” - Soft Cell

"Tainted Love" was originally a Soul song by Gloria Jones released in 1964. In 1981, the UK group Soft Cell released their version, which became one of the most iconic songs of the 1980s.

Here, the singer has decided to end a relationship that is unhealthy.

The love we share

Seems to go nowhere

And I’ve lost my light

For I toss and turn

I can’t sleep at night

~

I love you though you hurt me so

Now I’m gonna pack my things and go

When it was released, the term “toxic relationship” was not as common as it is today, but this song is a great example of one. “Toxic” means “harmful or dangerous” and is often related to poison and deadly materials.

The chemicals in this product are toxic. Keep them away from small children.

In everyday conversations, however, it can describe relationships, people and even environments that are mentally unhealthy.

Many workers left the company because of its toxic work environment.

That politician has a very toxic community of supporters.

“Tainted” - Slum Village featuring Dwele

Slum Village, a Hip Hop group from Detroit, Michigan, released this song in 2002.

Like "Tainted Love," parts of this song are about a bad relationship. To "taint" something is to make it dirty or to add something that reduces its quality or strength.

The scandal tainted the company's reputation.

Here, the rapper is telling a woman that the relationship she is in does not seem healthy, and perhaps she would be happier with someone else.

Yeah, your man is doin’ things I can’t really see

Don’t sound too good

It sounds tainted to me

“Don’t Speak” - No Doubt

No Doubt is a band from Anaheim, California, whose music includes pop, punk and reggae styles.

“Don’t Speak" was released in 1995 and is about a romantic relationship that is ending. However, this is difficult for the singer to accept. Instead of saying it directly, she would prefer her partner not to say anything at all.

It looks as though you’re letting go

And if it’s real, well, I don’t want to know

“Trying” - Nuspirit Helsinki

Nuspirit Helsinki is a group from Finland that makes music incorporating Jazz, House and Soul.

In "Trying," released in 2002, a woman ends a relationship with a partner who has been lying to her. She does not sound angry or depressed. Instead, she sounds confident and ready to move on with her life.

Now you want me to forgive

Start over, then we can begin to live

No way I can trust you now

Find a way, get over me somehow

"Get over" is a phrasal verb with several meanings. When talking about romantic relationships, getting over someone means leaving your feelings for them in the past, which allows you to move forward in a healthy way.

It took a long time for me to get over my ex-girlfriend, but I'm OK now.

Later in the song, we hear this line:

Why you try to get over on me

This time, the same phrasal verb plus "on" means "to trick or deceive" someone.

Many dishonest businesses try to get over on tourists who don't know the city well.

“Hey Ya!” - OutKast

“Hey Ya!” was a huge hit when it was released in 2003. It has a fast tempo and a bright, fun feeling (and music video).

However, many people don’t realize that the song is about the failures of love and the problems relationships create. Do couples stay together because they are in love or simply because of tradition?

We get together

Oh, we get together

But separate’s always better when there’s feelings involved

~

So why oh, why oh, why oh, why oh, why oh

Are we so in denial

When we know we’re not happy here?

<iframe loading="lazy" title="Outkast - Hey Ya!

“Bad Blood” - Taylor Swift

When you have "bad blood" with someone, it means something bad happened in the past between you and them and you are still unhappy about it.

In this case, the singer is in pain because of something hurtful that her partner did to her.

Did you think we’d be fine?

Still got scars on my back from your knife

So don’t think it’s the past

These kinda wounds, they last and they last

The second line above refers to the expression "stab someone in the back," which means "to lie to or betray" someone who trusts you.

Our colleague stabbed everyone in the back when he shared our company's secrets on social media.

“Secrets” - The Weeknd

As we've seen above, cheating is a big cause of many relationship problems.

In "Secrets," the singer confronts his girlfriend about her unfaithfulness. Just like Taylor Swift in "Bad Blood," we can say that he also has been stabbed in the back.

You tell me not to worry ‘bout

Those guys, those guys

You told me that you left it all

Behind, behind

It’s a lie, a lie

I catch you every time

Notice how both here and in Kelis' song, "catch" is used when someone is discovered doing something bad.

“Breaking Up” - Charli XCX

Sometimes a relationship ending is a cause for celebration, not sadness!

In "Breaking Up," released in 2014, the singer lists the reasons why she's happy to leave her boyfriend.

Everything was wrong with you

So breaking up was easy to do

Hated your friends and your family too

So breaking up was easy to do

“Can’t Stand Your Mother” - Lucy Pearl

As mentioned in the previous song, sometimes relationship issues come from a person's family. In this song, released in 2000, the biggest problems a couple seems to have are their mothers!

When you "can't stand" something (or someone), you can no longer accept or tolerate it.

I didn’t really wanna go there

But your momma’s all in my hair

In the closets, in the bedrooms

Saying things that I can’t bear

Being "in someone's hair" means being too involved in their life. It's annoying, and in this case, it's bad enough to end the relationship!

“I’m Not in Love” - 10cc

This is another song many people consider a classic. "I'm Not in Love" was released by British Rock band 10cc in 1975.

While the other songs we've mentioned are about bad relationships and the downsides of romance, the singer of this song keeps repeating that he is not in love at all.

But is that really true? Is he talking to someone else or to himself?

I like to see you

But then again

That doesn’t mean you mean that much to me

So if I call you

Don’t make a fuss

Don’t tell your friends about the two of us

"Making a fuss" means treating something like it is important and special.

I celebrated my birthday at home with only a few friends; I didn't want to make a fuss about it.

Wrap-Up

Over the years, Valentine's Day has grown from a day just for couples to a day that can be celebrated in a variety of ways.

So even if you aren't in a relationship, don't let that stop you from enjoying the day however you like. And if you need a break from romance, listen to these songs to hear musicians who feel the same way!

It's the holiday season once again! In many English-speaking countries, this means you'll be hearing Christmas songs in stores, in cafes and on the streets.

So today, we'll introduce ten classic songs and explain some lyrics from each of them. In addition to understanding the songs better, you can also use some of these phrases in your holiday greeting cards. Let's get started!

"Santa Claus is Coming to Town" (1934) – Harry Reser

This song tells children to be nice so they get presents from Santa Claus. The chorus goes like this:

You better watch out
You better not cry
You better not pout
I'm telling you why
Santa Claus is coming to town

"Pouting" is when children push out their lips to show that they are not happy.

You'll often hear parents telling their kids to "stop pouting. For example: "Stop pouting and do your homework!" or "Stop pouting and go to bed!"

<mdspan datatext="el1638267506126" class="mdspan-comment">"White Christmas" (1941) – Bing Crosby</mdspan>

In "White Christmas," a person happily looks back on Christmases he experienced in the past.

I said, I'm dreaming of a white Christmas
Just like the ones I used to know
Where the tree tops glisten
And children listen
To hear sleigh bells in the snow

"Glisten" means "to look wet and shiny." For example, ocean waves glisten in the sun and a nice shampoo might make your hair glisten.

"Sleigh bells" isn't a useful phrase in daily life, but you'll hear it in many Christmas songs, like "Jingle Bells." They refer to the bells on Santa's sleigh. According to Oxford University Press, sleighs were "<mdspan datatext="el1638341095463" class="mdspan-comment">unable to stop quickly enough so they needed a warning sound."</mdspan>

<mdspan datatext="el1638267521791" class="mdspan-comment">"Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" (1944) - Judy Garland</mdspan>

This song simply tells people to enjoy the holiday season.

Have yourself a merry little Christmas
Let your heart be light
From now on your troubles will be out of sight

Native English speakers don't usually say that their "heart is light," but there is the phrase "light-hearted." Something that's light-hearted is not meant to be serious. For example, light-hearted movies have funny scenes and happy endings. Most Christmas songs (like the ones in this post) are light-hearted too!

By the way, the "little" in "Merry Little Christmas" doesn't refer to size. English speakers sometimes include this word to add a casual, friendly feeling to their speech.

For students, learning when to use "little" in this way naturally may take some time, so be sure to listen for it in songs, movies and everyday conversations.

"<mdspan datatext="el1638280956002" class="mdspan-comment">The Christmas Song</mdspan>" (1946) – Nat King Cole

This song describes the sights, sounds, tastes, and smells of Christmas.

"Frost" is a thin layer of ice that appears when the weather is very cold. You may have heard it in the phrase, "frostbite."

In the past, people said that frost was caused by an imaginary spirit called "Jack Frost."

This song is about a reindeer named Rudolph who has a bright red nose, which the other reindeers make fun of. However, they start to respect him when his bright nose allows him to lead Santa's sleigh through the fog.

Rudolph the red nosed reindeer had a very shiny nose
And if you ever saw it, you would even say it glows

If something glows, it produces a soft and steady light. We usually use "glow" to talk about things that gently light up in the dark, like fireflies at night and stars in the sky. You'll see more examples of "glow" a little later on this list.

"Frosty the Snowman" (1950) - Gene Autry

This song is about a magical snowman who plays with the children. Like Rudolph in the previous song, Frosty is also a very famous symbol of Christmas.

Frosty the Snowman
Is a fairytale they say
He was made of snow
But the children know
How he came to life one day

In the song, "come to life" describes how Frosty changed from a pile of snow into a living, dancing snowman. You can use this phrase to describe other things that become active or alive. For example, here's a Daily News article about a volcano that "came to life" in March of 2021.

"I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus" (1952) - Jimmy Boyd

This is a song about a boy who sees his mother kissing Santa Claus on Christmas night. However, he doesn't realize that Santa is actually his father in a costume!

This song talks about all the things that make Christmas great.

It's the most wonderful time of the year
There be much mistletoeing
And hearts will be glowing
When loved ones are near
It's the most wonderful time of the year

Native English speakers don't usually say that their hearts "glow." However, it is used to describe people when they look especially happy or healthy, so the writer of this song probably wanted to express that people "glow" with happiness during Christmas.

A more common phrase is "glow with pride." For example: "Tom's parents glowed with pride when he won first place in the contest."

Another popular English expression that appears in this verse is "loved ones," which means the people you love. It's often used in Christmas greetings: "Happy holidays to you and your loved ones!"

"All I Want for Christmas is You" (1994) - Mariah Carey

This song is about someone who doesn't need presents for Christmas; instead, she just wants to be with her lover.

I just want you for my own
More than you could ever know
Make my wish come true
All I want for Christmas is you

"Come true" means "become real." Wishes, hopes and predictions are all things that can come true, but this phrase is most often used to talk about fantasies becoming reality. For example, someone might say, "My dream of moving to Hawaii finally came true."

This phrase is also used as a noun with "a" in a figurative way to describe a situation that is perfect or excellent. For example: "After living in a small apartment for many years, moving into this big house is a dream come true."

Happy Holidays!

One of the biggest songs of 2024 is "Espresso" by Sabrina Carpenter. You might enjoy dancing to it, but do you understand its lyrics? Let's take a closer look!

(Caution: Some of the lyrics of this song are very informal and impolite, so please read carefully.)

Why is it Called "Espresso"?

This song is about a woman who's made a man fall completely in love with her. She sounds arrogant as she talks about the effect she has on him and how she compares to his ex-girlfriend.

The man is so obsessed that he can't sleep. It's like he drank some espresso with a lot of caffeine, and now he has too much energy to rest!

And just like people can become addicted to the caffeine in coffee, the man has become addicted to the singer.

(To learn all about coffee and caffeine slang, be sure to read our article on it here.)

What Do the Lyrics Mean?

The song begins with the chorus, which is repeated several times.

Now he's thinkin' 'bout me every night, oh

Is it that sweet?

I guess so

Say you can't sleep

Baby, I know

That's that me, espresso

In casual English, speakers often don't pronounce the final "g" on -ing words. That's why "thinking" is "thinkin'."

Also, notice that "about" is shortened to just "'bout." This is very common in songs because rhythm is important, so unimportant parts of words can be removed as long as the meaning is clear.

However, shortening words like this is only appropriate in very informal situations, so be careful when doing it yourself.

Move it up, down, left, right, oh

Switch it up like Nintendo

Say you can't sleep

Baby, I know

That's that me, espresso

The lyrics "move it up, down, left, right" are a reference to moving your body while dancing.

The phrasal verb "switch up" refers to changing or replacing one thing for something else. In this case, it might mean the man wants to replace his girlfriend for someone new!

However, "switch" here is also a reference to the Nintendo Switch, a popular video game console that was released in 2017.

Related article: Essential English Vocabulary for Video Games

I can't relate

To desperation

My give a f*cks are on vacation

And I got this one boy

And he won't stop calling

When they act this way

I know I got 'em

When you can "relate" to something, it means you can understand it because you have experienced it yourself.

I can relate to them because we've had similar life experiences.

The adjective form is "relatable."

I thought her story was very relatable.

But in the song, the singer does not know what it's like to be desperate for someone, so she cannot relate to the man she is singing about.

This idea is also expressed in the next line: "My give a f*cks are on vacation."

This is very informal English and uses a word generally considered to be rude.

When you "give a f*ck," it means you care or are interested. However, this phrase is mostly used in the negative sense, meaning that someone does not care.

John is one of the most selfish people I've ever met. He doesn't give a f*ck about anyone but himself.

When the singer says, "my give a f*cks are on vacation," she's using the phrase as a noun; it's another way of saying, "I don't care" or "I'm not interested at all."

Too bad your ex don't do it for ya

Walked in and dream came true'd it for ya

Soft skin and I perfumed it for ya

I know I Mountain Dew it for ya

That morning coffee brewed it for ya

One touch and I brand new'd it for ya

When someone or something "does it for you," it means you really like them/it. Again, it's mostly used in the negative sense.

I thought the action scenes were good, but overall, the movie just didn't do it for me.

That restaurant is popular, but the food there doesn't do it for me.

So the line "too bad your ex don't do it for ya" means something like "It's too bad your ex-girlfriend doesn't excite you."

By the way, Mountain Dew is the name of a popular soft drink. "Dew" is pronounced just like "do," so this line is a clever way of saying "I know I do it for you" or "I know you like me."

The phrases "dream came true" and "brand new" are both used like verbs here. This is not common in everyday English, but it's memorable in songs!

I'm working late

'Cause I'm a singer

Oh, he looks so cute

Wrapped around my finger

My twisted humor

Make him laugh so often

My honey bee

Come and get this pollen

When you have someone "wrapped around your finger," it means you have control over them, and they will believe or do anything you say. This term has a negative nuance, but the singer uses it in a playful way. Here's another example:

The dirty politician has his supporters wrapped around his finger.

"Twist" is a verb that means "to change something's shape by bending or turning it."

You have to twist the cap firmly to remove it.

The adjective form "twisted," however, often describes something strange and even a bit evil.

The author is famous for twisted horror stories that have earned him fans around the world.

So the singer has a dark and unusual sense of humor — but it seems the man thinks it's funny!

Finally, the singer compares the man to a bee attracted to pollen, a powder produced by flowers. Again, this suggests that the man is addicted and can't control himself.

Wrap-Up

If you want to improve your English, textbooks and lessons aren't the only ways to learn. Listening to music (and watching TV) is a great way to improve your listening ability and to learn useful phrases and vocabulary.

Now the next time you hear "Espresso," you'll know exactly what it means. 🎶 ☕
