This time, we'll share some handy tips for reading numbers in English, including decimals, fractions and very large numbers you may sometimes see or read about in the news.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_to_Read_Basic_Numbers\"><\/span><strong>How to Read Basic Numbers<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"612\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.blog.engoo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2024\/11\/19022729\/read_numbers_english_1-1024x612.jpg\" alt=\"Numbers printed on the buttons of an old-fashioned cash register\" class=\"wp-image-10144\" srcset=\"https:\/\/assets.blog.engoo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2024\/11\/19022729\/read_numbers_english_1-1024x612.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/assets.blog.engoo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2024\/11\/19022729\/read_numbers_english_1-300x179.jpg 300w, https:\/\/assets.blog.engoo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2024\/11\/19022729\/read_numbers_english_1-768x459.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>First, let's look at the basics of numbers 0 \u2013100.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you know how to read numbers from 0 to 20 and 100, the rest are easy to remember because they follow a pattern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0 \u2013 10<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>0 \u2013 10, of course, is the most basic set of numbers, so be sure to have these completely memorized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>11 \u2013 19<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Except for 11 (eleven) and 12 (twelve), notice that the rest of the numbers end in \"-teen.\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is where we get the words \"teen\" and \"teenager,\" which refer to boys and girls between the ages of 13 and 19.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>20 \u2013 90<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After ten itself, each unit of ten ends in <em>-ty<\/em>: 20 (twenty), 30 (thirty), 40, 50, 60, 70, 80 and 90.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Be careful not to write 40 as \"fourty\" \u2014&nbsp;the correct spelling is \"forty\" (with no \"u\").<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>100 \u2013 999<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The unit of measure for three <a href=\"https:\/\/engoo.com\/app\/words\/word\/digit\/osPxJbuCTwu457yrDuAo5g\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">digits<\/a> is \"hundred.\" Note that there is generally no \"s\" when reading these numbers; so 200 is read \"two hundred,\" 300 is \"three hundred,\" etc. This is also true for bigger numbers with more digits (\"thousand,\" \"million\", etc.).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, \"s\" is added in expressions like \"hundreds of ~\" and \"thousands of ~,\" as in the following examples.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>They live <strong>hundreds<\/strong> <strong>of<\/strong> miles away from us.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There are <strong>thousands<\/strong> <strong>of<\/strong> fans in the stadium.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The tourist area is visited by <strong>millions of <\/strong>travelers every year.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_to_Read_Numbers_with_Many_Digits\"><\/span><strong>How to Read Numbers with Many Digits<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>For large numbers, every set of three digits means moving to a new unit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Thousands\"><\/span><strong>Thousands<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If there are three digits to the right of the comma, the number is in the thousands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1,<strong>000<\/strong> \u2192 one thousand<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>10,<strong>000<\/strong> \u2192 ten thousand<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>100,<strong>000<\/strong> \u2192 one hundred thousand<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Note that especially in the US, there is often no comma after the first digit for numbers between 1000 and 9999. For example, you may see either 4,500 or 4500. However, both of these numbers are read in the same way: \"four thousand five-hundred.\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Related article: <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/engoo.com\/blog\/study\/should-you-learn-british-english-or-american-english\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Should You Learn British English or American English?<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Millions\"><\/span><strong>Millions&nbsp;<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If there are six digits after the comma, the number is in the millions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1,<strong>000,000<\/strong> \u2192 one million<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>10,<strong>000,000<\/strong> \u2192 ten million<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>100,<strong>000,000<\/strong> \u2192 one hundred million<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Billions\"><\/span><strong>Billions<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Numbers in the billions have nine digits after the comma, three more digits than numbers in the millions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1,<strong>000,000,000<\/strong> \u2192 one billion<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>10,<strong>000,000,000<\/strong> \u2192 ten billion<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>100,<strong>000,000,000<\/strong> \u2192 one hundred billion<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-dots\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>Let's review:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Number + three digits = thousand<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Number + six digits = million<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Number + nine digits = billion<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you've memorized that, you can quickly read numbers just by looking at the number to the left of the comma.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You won't usually need to count higher than the billions, but there are rare cases with even bigger numbers. So because we have two of them, \"third\" is plural \u2014&nbsp;\"two-third<strong>s<\/strong>.\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>5\/8 \u2192 five-eighths<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here, too, \"5\/8\" represents five of eight parts, so \"eighth\" is the plural \"eighths.\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What about when the denominator is two or four?
