It takes place in Washington D.C., the capital of the United States, about 362 kilometers (or 225 miles) from <a href=\"https:\/\/engoo.com\/blog\/travel-fun\/big-apples-and-big-shoulders-nicknames-for-8-us-cities\/#New_York_City_NY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">New York City<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Members of the government and the general public gather in front of the U.S. Capitol Building to watch as the new president and vice-president promise to do their duty for the nation. This is known as the <a href=\"https:\/\/engoo.com\/app\/words\/word\/swear-in\/tJbDJsfuTzKphs7ygsT19g\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">swearing-in<\/a> ceremony, which is when both \"take the oath of office.\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Note that before taking this oath, they are officially called the \"president-elect\" and the \"vice-president elect.\")<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After this, the new president gives a speech before joining a parade. Later in the day, special parties and celebrations take place around the Washington D.C. area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_is_the_Oath_of_Office\"><\/span><strong>What is the Oath of Office?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The main event of Inauguration Day is the swearing-in ceremony.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First, the vice-president elect places his or her hand on the Bible and repeats this <a href=\"https:\/\/engoo.com\/app\/words\/word\/oath\/0FElRPnxEeaIJudFUyobJQ\">oath<\/a> (or promise):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>\"I do <\/em><strong><em>solemnly swear <\/em><\/strong><em>(or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and <\/em><strong><em>allegiance<\/em><\/strong><em> to the same; that I take this <\/em><strong><em>obligation<\/em><\/strong><em> freely, without any mental <\/em><strong><em>reservation<\/em><\/strong><em> or purpose of <\/em><strong><em>evasion<\/em><\/strong><em>; and that I will well and faithfully <\/em><strong><em>discharge<\/em><\/strong><em> the duties of the office on which I am about to enter: So help me God.\"<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Let's take a closer look at some of the language in this oath.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>\"I do solemnly <\/em><strong><em>swear<\/em><\/strong><em> \u2026\"<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.blog.engoo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2025\/01\/06025807\/inauguration_english_2-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"A prisoner in an orange jumpsuit talking a lawyer in a business suit\" class=\"wp-image-10396\" srcset=\"https:\/\/assets.blog.engoo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2025\/01\/06025807\/inauguration_english_2-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/assets.blog.engoo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2025\/01\/06025807\/inauguration_english_2-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/assets.blog.engoo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2025\/01\/06025807\/inauguration_english_2-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/assets.blog.engoo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2025\/01\/06025807\/inauguration_english_2-420x280.jpg 420w, https:\/\/assets.blog.engoo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2025\/01\/06025807\/inauguration_english_2-840x560.jpg 840w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>To \"swear\" to something is to make a deep and serious promise. In the oath, the speaker is promising to support and protect the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You may also hear this word in English-language films and TV when someone is speaking in a courtroom; witnesses must first reply to the question \"Do you solemnly swear that you will tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth?\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In casual situations, people sometimes use this word to emphasize that they are telling the truth.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"unified-block unified-chat-bubble pos-left\"><div class=\"unified-chat-bubble-user\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.blog.engoo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2023\/02\/22141657\/avatar_22.png\" class=\"unified-chat-bubble-avatar\" width=\"50\" height=\"50\"><div class=\"unified-chat-bubble-name\">A<\/div><\/div><div class=\"unified-chat-bubble-content\"><div class=\"block-align-none\">What else do you know?<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"unified-block unified-chat-bubble pos-right\"><div class=\"unified-chat-bubble-user\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.blog.engoo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2023\/02\/22141544\/avatar_5.png\" class=\"unified-chat-bubble-avatar\" width=\"50\" height=\"50\"><div class=\"unified-chat-bubble-name\">B<\/div><\/div><div class=\"unified-chat-bubble-content\"><div class=\"block-align-none\">I told you everything I know. I <strong>swear<\/strong>!<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<p>The phrase \"I could've sworn ~\" means the speaker strongly believes something that doesn't seem to be true.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>I could've sworn<\/strong> I left my keys on the table, but they're not here. What happened to them?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\"Swear\" originally included a religious nuance, which some people are uncomfortable with. As a result, it is sometimes replaced with \"<a href=\"https:\/\/engoo.com\/app\/words\/word\/affirm\/zga0ELstQmCjlQAAAD1Leg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">affirm<\/a>,\" which has a similar meaning. Unlike \"swear,\" however, \"affirm\" is not commonly used outside of formal situations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, notice the word \"solemnly\" before \"swear\/affirm.\" \"<a href=\"https:\/\/engoo.com\/app\/words\/word\/solemn\/rtMbzwCCS2-9iA1FEWQEMA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Solemn<\/a>\" is an adjective that means \"formal and respectful.\" In other words, the person taking the oath is making a promise with respect and care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>\"... that I will bear true faith and <\/em><strong><em>allegiance<\/em><\/strong><em> to the same\u2026\"<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>\"Allegiance\" is a noun that means \"loyalty\" or \"commitment.\" So swearing your allegiance to a group (such as a country, government or political party) means promising to be loyal to it. \"Allegiance\" is not common in everyday English.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>\"I take this <\/em><strong><em>obligation<\/em><\/strong><em> freely, without any mental <\/em><strong><em>reservation<\/em><\/strong><em> or purpose of <\/em><strong><em>evasion<\/em><\/strong><em>\"<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.blog.engoo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2025\/01\/06025903\/inauguration_english_3-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Parents playing with their young daughter in a park\" class=\"wp-image-10397\" srcset=\"https:\/\/assets.blog.engoo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2025\/01\/06025903\/inauguration_english_3-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/assets.blog.engoo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2025\/01\/06025903\/inauguration_english_3-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/assets.blog.engoo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2025\/01\/06025903\/inauguration_english_3-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/assets.blog.engoo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2025\/01\/06025903\/inauguration_english_3-420x280.jpg 420w, https:\/\/assets.blog.engoo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2025\/01\/06025903\/inauguration_english_3-840x560.jpg 840w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\"Obligation\" is a noun for something that someone must do. For example, politicians who take this oath have an obligation to support and defend the country \u2014 they <em>have to<\/em> do it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>As a parent, I have an <strong>obligation<\/strong> to keep my child safe, healthy and happy.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A teacher's <strong>obligation<\/strong> is to help every student do the best they can.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You can be \"under\" (or \"not under\") an obligation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>We didn't sign a contract, so we are <strong>under no obligation<\/strong> to work with you.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Notice that the oath says, \"I take this obligation freely.\" This means the speaker is <em>choosing<\/em> to accept the large responsibility of the job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>\"... without any mental <\/em><strong><em>reservation<\/em><\/strong><em> or purpose of <\/em><strong><em>evasion<\/em><\/strong><em>\"<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>We use \"reservation\" to talk about plans we make in advance to go to places like restaurants and hotels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>I made a <strong>reservation<\/strong> for us at an Italian restaurant downtown.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>However, it also has another meaning: \"doubt.\" If you \"have a reservation\" about something, it means you are not certain about it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Everyone else on the team has agreed to the plan, but I still have <strong>reservations<\/strong> about it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I was right to have <strong>reservations<\/strong> about buying this used car; it's a piece of junk!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\"Evasion\" is the noun form of the verb \"evade,\" which means \"to escape or avoid someone or something.\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the oath, the speaker promises that they will not try to avoid their presidential responsibilities. This word isn't very common in daily conversations, but you may hear or read it in the news.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The criminal was finally caught after <strong>evading<\/strong> the police for months.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>After the vice-president is sworn in, the president-elect is next.
