Goals<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>From the start, it\u2019s important to tell the tutor what you want your child to take away from the lessons as well as what your son\u2019s or daughter\u2019s wishes are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Letting the tutor know about your and your child\u2019s goals will allow them to tailor their instruction to your needs. For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>If you want the tutor to help your child prepare for a standardized test or do better in school, the tutor will know to focus more on grammar and vocabulary and correct them more often.<\/li><li>If you want the tutor to prepare the child for the family\u2019s relocation abroad, they\u2019ll know to focus more on speaking and listening skills.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You can also be clear about how strict you want the tutor to be. For example, if you just want the child to have fun with English, you can ask that the tutor play more games and not correct your child as much.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And if you plan to provide a textbook, you\u2019ll also want to let the tutor how much you expect them to stick to it. Sometimes, tutors may pick other materials if they notice the textbook is too challenging or too simple or if a child seems bored or tired. So it\u2019s helpful to let them know if they absolutely need to use your materials or if it\u2019s OK to do something different than planned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whatever the case, it\u2019s important to get the tutor on the same page as you early on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2_Your_Childs_English_Level\"><\/span>2. Your Child\u2019s English Level<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ll also want to let the tutor know about your child\u2019s current English abilities. This can be anything from \u201cThey just know how to say hello\u201d to \u201cThey are in third grade now and seem to be doing better than their classmates.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can also share some of your child\u2019s experiences learning English so far. For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Have you exposed your child to English at home through speaking it or playing English TV and songs for them? If so, how they have responded to this?<\/li><li>How many years has your child studied English in school? At what age did these classes start?<\/li><li>What is your child currently learning about in their English classes?<\/li><li>How does your child feel about their English classes and their English teachers?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If there\u2019s any English-related experience your child isn\u2019t happy with, make sure to inform the tutor about it. This allows them to avoid activities that your child won\u2019t enjoy.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_Interests\"><\/span>3. Interests<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s not easy to have a child sit down in front of a computer with a stranger speaking to them in a language they don\u2019t totally understand.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So letting an online English tutor know about your child\u2019s interests can help them better connect with and keep your child engaged. For example, if a tutor knows that your daughter likes dancing, they can do some little dances with her during the lesson to keep her engaged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some things you can share about your child to help the tutor better understand them:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Hobbies (e.g. sports, singing, dancing, drawing, reading)<\/li><li>Favorite food, candy, and snacks<\/li><li>Favorite movies and actors\/actresses<\/li><li>Favorite songs and music groups<\/li><li>Favorite books<\/li><li>Favorite video games<\/li><li>Favorite Youtube channels<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"4_Learning_Style\"><\/span>4. Learning Style<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>While tutors will eventually figure out the best way your son or daughter learns, you can save them a lot of time by directly sharing your experiences, such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Tricks you used to teach your child to ride a bike or tie their shoe laces.<\/li><li>Who your child\u2019s favorite teacher in school is and their teaching style.<\/li><li>Whether your child likes being complimented (\u201cGreat job!\u201d \u201cYou\u2019re awesome!\u201d), rewarded (e.g. with stickers), and so on.<\/li><li>Whether your child likes competition and games.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"5_How_Often_You_Want_to_Check_In\"><\/span>5. How Often You Want to Check In<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, having check-in meetings with your child\u2019s tutor can make their classes more effective. During these check-in meetings, you can:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Ask questions about your child\u2019s progress.<\/li><li>Make requests like \u201cCould you teach my daughter more vocabulary?\u201d or \u201cCould you correct my daughter less?\u201d<\/li><li>Update the tutor on the child\u2019s life, such as \u201cWe recently got a puppy, so you can ask my son about it!\u201d or \u201cHis best friend recently moved away, so he might be a little sad.\u201d<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Tutors will find this kind of information very helpful. Just make sure to tell the tutor how often you\u2019d like to check in so they know what to expect.
