However, <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/29771568\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">psychology<\/a> tells us that the idea of working for a reward far in the future isn\u2019t motivating for adults \u2014 let alone kids!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So today, we\u2019ll introduce five easy things you can do at home that will actually make your child interested in English (read: trick them into thinking it was their idea). We\u2019ll focus on kids ages ten and under in this post.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"1_Make_English_a_Part_of_Daily_Life\"><\/span>1. Make English a Part of Daily Life<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Kids are smart and will quickly realize if you\u2019re trying to teach them something they don\u2019t find very useful. So your first order of business is to prevent your child from asking, \u201cWhy do I need English?\u201d by making it as easy and natural to them as breathing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A good way to do that is to introduce them to English as early as possible. There are plenty of ways for you to do so, such as the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Buy them toys and books that use English.<\/li><li>If you plan to hire a nanny, try to find one who speaks English or knows it well enough to use some with your child.<\/li><li>Speak in English with your friends in front of your child. If that\u2019s not an option, you can <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/engoo.com\" target=\"_blank\">practice having conversations with an Engoo tutor<\/a>!)<\/li><li>If your child is allowed to use a tablet or a phone, be sure to set the language to English.*<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.blog.engoo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2021\/04\/13201719\/blocks.png\" alt=\"English alphabet blocks - toy\" class=\"wp-image-520\" width=\"623\" height=\"467\" srcset=\"https:\/\/assets.blog.engoo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2021\/04\/13201719\/blocks.png 830w, https:\/\/assets.blog.engoo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2021\/04\/13201719\/blocks-300x225.png 300w, https:\/\/assets.blog.engoo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2021\/04\/13201719\/blocks-768x576.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 623px) 100vw, 623px\" \/><figcaption>Simple toys that allow for open-ended play and plenty of parental interaction are best.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>You can also merge English with some regular routines you have with your kid. For example, let\u2019s say you\u2019re grocery shopping with your child. On the car ride over, you can play some kids music in English. (<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/channel\/UCLsooMJoIpl_7ux2jvdPB-Q\" target=\"_blank\">Super Simple Songs<\/a> is a good place to start if need some ideas!)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And at the grocery store, make a game out of getting the products you want by asking your child to get you things in English (\u201cGo get \u2026 bananas! Go get \u2026 apples! I bet you don\u2019t remember what kiwis are!\u201d).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By exposing your child to English on a daily basis, they\u2019ll not only become familiar with how the language sounds and looks. Using English will also become second nature for them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>*Note: The <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthychildren.org\/English\/family-life\/Media\/Pages\/Where-We-Stand-TV-Viewing-Time.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>American Academy of Pediatrics<\/em><\/a><em> does not recommend children under the age of 18 months use screens, unless they are making video calls.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2_Make_English_Fun_For_You_and_Your_Child\"><\/span>2. Make English Fun For You and Your Child<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Many parents these days feel pressure to turn their children into fluent English speakers early on. However, it\u2019s better to take things step-by-step. For now, focus on sparking their interest in English first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Remember that an important part of being interested in something is not hating it. So try to focus on making your child\u2019s early experiences with English as enjoyable and stress-free as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This means that instead of sending them to English classes that drill them in grammar and vocabulary, it\u2019s probably better to play them kid-friendly movies, TV shows, and music.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To get started, you can check out Peppa Pig\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/channel\/UCAOtE1V7Ots4DjM8JLlrYgg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">official Youtube channel<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.disneyplus.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Disney+<\/a>, which streams <em>Disney<\/em> movies as well as <em>National Geographic<\/em> documentaries, and other fun, educational content in English.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Keep in mind that every child has a different definition of \u201cfun.\u201d If your child is into sports, you might have to watch sports matches in English. If your child is into cooking, watch cooking shows and try to cook things from recipes in English.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And don\u2019t forget that fun is contagious. If your kid sees you having fun with English, they are more likely to enjoy it as well. We\u2019ve had parents who\u2019ve told us about how they would often play some English songs they liked while doing housework and how one day, their children would suddenly start singing along!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_Make_English_About_Family\"><\/span>3. Make English About Family<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Keep in mind that interaction is key to learning languages, whether it\u2019s our native tongue or a foreign language. After all, languages aren\u2019t a one-way street!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So when possible, try to use some English when doing activities with your child. Watch movies, sing English songs, and play simple games with them (e.g. hide-and-seek) using English.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Doing arts and crafts together, such as origami or painting, is a good way to introduce them to simple nouns, shapes, and colors. (Remember that working on your child\u2019s motor skills may also <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/early-motor-skills-may-affect-language-development-42200\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">help their language development<\/a>!)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And don\u2019t forget about picture books! These can be bilingual or fully in English. Classics like <em>The Very Hungry Caterpillar<\/em> are a big hit with kids and have at most one sentence per page, so they shouldn\u2019t be hard to read even if you don\u2019t feel confident in your English.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And if you\u2019re hesitant to read to your kids in English, there are plenty of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=72Lv7y9WKbs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">videos<\/a> of people who do this which you can learn from. But know that it\u2019s better if your child hears you reading and not some person from the computer. And don\u2019t stress if you make mistakes. The purpose of these activities is to have fun with your child while doing something in English!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"4_Make_English_About_Friends\"><\/span>4. Make English About Friends<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s important for children to realize why English is useful for them, and a good way to do this is to make friends who speak the language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact, if a child doesn\u2019t have English-speaking peers, they\u2019ll see no reason to use it and may even ask you to stop using it with them altogether!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So to make sure English stays important to them, here are some tips:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Find a playgroup with English-speaking kids. These don\u2019t have to be totally in English. In fact, it\u2019s good to have a mix of local families and those from English-speaking backgrounds. The important thing is that everyone wants to raise their kids to be bilingual and bicultural.<\/li><li>Enroll your child in an interdisciplinary English-speaking preschool or kindergarten, where they don\u2019t just teach English as a class, but also use it to teach other subjects.<\/li><li>If you have friends or family in English-speaking countries who have kids, try to visit them during holidays and video-call each other the rest of the year. That way, they\u2019ll associate English with these fun holidays and new friends.<\/li><li>Hire some older English-speaking kids who are good at the things your child is interested in.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you can\u2019t organize in person meet-ups for your kids, try showing them videos of kids around the world who can speak English and try finding penpals from other countries they can write to or video-call with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"5_Online_Tutoring\"><\/span>5.
