This means it's an important skill for both your personal and professional life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But for many English language learners, small talk can be difficult! Here are some examples:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Your family (<em>\"Do you have any brothers or sisters?\"<\/em> or <em>\u201cHow\u2019s your family?\u201d<\/em>)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Your job (<em>\"What do you do for a living?\"<\/em> or <em>\u201cHow\u2019s your job going?\u201d<\/em>)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Your current location (<em>\"Have you been here before?\"<\/em> or <em>\u201cHow long have you lived here?\u201d<\/em>)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Your hobbies (<em>\"What do you do for fun?\"<\/em> or <em>\u201cWhat games are you playing these days?\u201d<\/em>)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Activities you may be doing (<em>\u201cHow\u2019s your book club going?\u201d<\/em>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>When you know what questions to expect, you'll be better prepared to answer them! Preparing in advance will also let you <a href=\"https:\/\/engoo.com\/blog\/language-tips\/12-phrasal-verbs-using-look\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">look up<\/a> the words and phrases you need to answer these questions clearly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Tip_2_Add_Details\"><\/span>Tip #2: Add Details<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In English conversations, it\u2019s a good idea to add a little detail when you answer a question. For example, if you\u2019re a flight attendant, a fun fact you can share is that you get free flights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>I\u2019m a flight attendant, which means I get to travel all over the world for free!<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Details like this can make conversations more interesting. They\u2019ll also give your conversation partner new ideas about what questions to ask next.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But remember to keep your responses short; usually two or three sentences is enough. It's a good idea, but it must be done correctly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If ask too many questions without anything in between, you may quickly run out of questions to ask. Also, you might make your conversation partner feel a bit uncomfortable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So instead, it's better to \u201ccushion\u201d your questions with statements. Why did you choose to become a vegetarian?<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Statements like \u201cWhat a lovely name!\u201d and \u201cThat\u2019s a long time!\u201d help show that the speaker is interested in their conversation partner\u2019s responses. Look at some questions people might ask in the following situations:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Waiting at a bus stop:  \u201cIt\u2019s cold today, isn\u2019t it?\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Before a meeting: \u201cThese meetings always start late, don't they?\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>At a party: \u201cThe drinks are pretty good, don\u2019t you think?\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Because these questions are asked as conversation starters, it\u2019s normal to agree in response.  It\u2019s even better if you add a little detail when you do it! For example:<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"unified-block unified-chat-bubble pos-left\"><div class=\"unified-chat-bubble-user\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.blog.engoo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2023\/02\/22141737\/avatar_28.png\" class=\"unified-chat-bubble-avatar\" width=\"50\" height=\"50\"><div class=\"unified-chat-bubble-name\">A<\/div><\/div><div class=\"unified-chat-bubble-content\"><div class=\"block-align-none\">Cold, isn't it?<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"unified-block unified-chat-bubble pos-right\"><div class=\"unified-chat-bubble-user\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.blog.engoo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2023\/02\/22141604\/avatar_11.png\" class=\"unified-chat-bubble-avatar\" width=\"50\" height=\"50\"><div class=\"unified-chat-bubble-name\">B<\/div><\/div><div class=\"unified-chat-bubble-content\"><div class=\"block-align-none\">Yeah, <strong>it's freezing!<\/strong><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<p>So, is it possible to <em>disagree<\/em> and still keep the conversation flowing?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes! However, remember to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Be friendly - Smile and speak in a friendly tone of voice. Otherwise, the other person may think you\u2019re not interested in speaking to them.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Give a short reason - Try to explain why you disagree in an interesting way. For example, in response to \u201cCold, isn\u2019t it?\u201d you can say, \u201cActually, this is <em>warm<\/em> where I\u2019m from!\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Tip_5_Ask_Open-Ended_Questions\"><\/span>Tip #5: Ask Open-Ended Questions<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes-no questions are useful when small talk begins, but if you want the conversation to continue, it's better to ask a different type.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, look at these two questions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Do you like rock music?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What kind of music do you like?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>For the first question, the other person can reply with a simple \"yes\" or \"no.\" But the second question is open-ended \u2014 it can be answered in many different ways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Open-ended questions encourage people to talk in more detail.
