And why didn't the waiter say \u201cWhat will you <em>drink<\/em>\u201d? Today, we\u2019ll explain why \u201chave\u201d is used this way in English!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%E2%80%9CEat%E2%80%9D_and_%E2%80%9Cdrink%E2%80%9D_focus_on_an_action\"><\/span>\u201cEat\u201d and \u201cdrink\u201d focus on an action<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You should use \u201ceat\u201d and \u201cdrink\u201d when you want to focus on <strong>the action of putting food or drinks into your mouth<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, if you saw a squirrel eating a nut, like in the photo below, you could simply say, \u201cThe squirrel is eating a nut.\u201d However, if you said, \"The squirrel is having a nut,\" it would sound very unnatural. Maybe the food was tastier than the food you usually eat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/engoo.com\/blog\/language-tips\/on-the-other-hand-expressions-for-making-comparisons\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">On the other hand<\/a>, the second sentence isn't as focused on the food. \u201cWe had a nice lunch\u201d could mean that the food was nice, but the food was only one part of the experience. Instead, you're speaking about more general things like the overall experience. This is similar to how we say \"have a party\" or \"have a wedding.\" In all of these examples, we're referring to the complete experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let's review:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><\/td><td><strong>Eat\/Drink<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>Have<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Refers to \u2026<\/td><td>Either eating or drinking<\/td><td>Both eating and drinking<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>The focus is on \u2026<\/td><td>The act of putting food or drinks in your mouth<\/td><td>The overall experience<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%E2%80%9CHave%E2%80%9D_is_used_in_polite_requests_and_offers\"><\/span>\u201cHave\u201d is used in polite requests and offers<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Native English speakers also use \u201chave\u201d when offering and requesting food or drinks. This is because \u201chave\u201d is less specific, so it can be more polite than saying \u201ceat\u201d or \u201cdrink\u201d directly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, if you\u2019re at someone\u2019s house and you get thirsty, you could ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Could I <strong>have<\/strong> something to drink, please?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>And if you\u2019re at a restaurant ordering coffee, you\u2019d say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>I\u2019ll <strong>have<\/strong> coffee without milk, please.
