The problem is that some of the phrases you might think are polite can actually be rude. Read on to find out the top three phrases you should never use with a boss or a client.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"1_I_would_like_you_to_%E2%80%A6\"><\/span>1. I would like you to \u2026&nbsp;<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Some learners believe that \u201cwould\u201d is a polite word and as long as you use it, you will sound polite. Unfortunately, <a href=\"https:\/\/engoo.com\/blog\/2021\/04\/20\/could-you-vs-would-you-whats-the-difference\/\">this belief is misguided<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI would like you to \u2026\u201d is a good example of this. It may seem more polite than other possibly rude options like \u201cI need you to \u2026 .\u201d But in reality, it sounds like you are ordering someone to do something for you.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, you might hear a teacher use it with their students. Or your manager might use it with you. But don\u2019t use it yourself \u2014 unless you have the authority to tell someone what to do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So don't say something like \u201cI would like you to check the contract by Monday\u201d to your boss. Instead, rephrase your request as a question.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"unified-block unified-sentences block-align-none\"><strong class=\"unified-sentences-title\">Could you please check the contract by Monday?\u00a0<\/strong><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"unified-block unified-sentences block-align-none\"><strong class=\"unified-sentences-title\">Would it be possible for you to check the contract by Monday?<\/strong><\/div>\n\n\n<p>A big reason questions sound more polite is because the other person has the option of saying \u201cno.\u201d You\u2019re not ordering them to do anything \u2014 you\u2019re giving them a choice. And that shows a lot more respect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2_Please_%E2%80%A6\"><\/span>2. Please \u2026 .<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPlease\u201d is another word that\u2019s tricky for learners. You might think it makes everything polite, but that depends on how you use it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your English teacher probably says \u201cplease\u201d at the beginning of their sentences: e.g. \u201cPlease turn to page 5\u201d or \u201cPlease put your books away.\u201d Bosses and managers also use \u201cplease\u201d like this: e.g. \u201cPlease assist Heather with this project\u201d or \u201cPlease cancel my meetings this afternoon.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But if you\u2019re not in a position to tell people what to do, don\u2019t use \u201cplease\u201d at the beginning of a sentence. For example, you would sound rude if you said \u201cPlease reply by the end of today\u201d or \u201cPlease check our proposal\u201d to your boss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Using \"please\" at the beginning of a sentence makes it sound like an order. To avoid this problem, rephrase your sentence as a question and <a href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.cambridge.org\/grammar\/british-grammar\/please-and-thank-you#:~:text=this%20is%20the%20most%20common%20position%20for%20please%20in%20a%20request\">use \u201cplease\u201d at the end<\/a> of it.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"unified-block unified-sentences block-align-none\"><strong class=\"unified-sentences-title\">Could you check our proposal, please?<\/strong><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Another option is to use polite phrases like \u201cwhen you get a chance\u201d or \u201cI would really appreciate it if\u201d instead of \u201cplease.\u201d Showing appreciation with phrases like \u201cthanks\u201d also helps you sound more polite.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"unified-block unified-sentences block-align-none\"><strong class=\"unified-sentences-title\">Could you check our proposal when you get a chance? Thanks!<\/strong><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"unified-block unified-sentences block-align-none\"><strong class=\"unified-sentences-title\">I would really appreciate it if you could reply by the end of today.<\/strong><\/div>\n\n\n<p>There are some exceptions to the \u201cDon\u2019t use \u2018please\u2019 at the start of a sentence\u201d rule. For example, if you\u2019re making a very small request, it\u2019s acceptable to start with \u201cplease\u201d: e.g.&nbsp; \u201cPlease give me a minute\u201d or \u201cPlease tell Joe I said \u2018hi.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_I_expect_you_to_%E2%80%A6\"><\/span>3. I expect you to \u2026<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Another phrase that learners mistakenly use is \u201cI expect you to \u2026 .\u201d It\u2019s OK for a parent to use this with their children: e.g. \u201cI expect you to be home by 9 pm\u201d or \u201cI expect you to be on your best behavior.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But you should not use this with a boss, client, or even a coworker.
