To understand how it works and how you can better prepare for it, it\u2019s important to know the four <a href=\"https:\/\/engoo.com\/app\/words\/word\/criterion\/zga0ELstQmCjlQAAAAATVw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">criteria<\/a> you\u2019re graded on. Each of these counts for 25% of your total score.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So far, we\u2019ve covered two of them \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/engoo.com\/blog\/2022\/09\/28\/what-lexical-resource-means-on-the-ielts-speaking-test\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">lexical resource<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/engoo.com\/blog\/2023\/01\/10\/what-grammatical-range-and-accuracy-mean-on-the-ielts-speaking-test\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">grammatical range and accuracy<\/a>. Today, we\u2019re talking about \u201cfluency and coherence.\u201d What does it mean and what are some tips for scoring well in this category? Read on to find out!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_IELTS_means_by_%E2%80%9Cfluency_and_coherence%E2%80%9D\"><\/span>What IELTS means by \u201cfluency and coherence\u201d<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Fluency\"><\/span>Fluency<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFluency\u201d refers to how easy it is for you to speak in English. For example, are you able to speak for a long time without pausing or slowing down to think of the right words? If so, you\u2019ll get a high score in fluency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To get a better idea of what IELTS means by fluency, check out the following table which shows what\u2019s expected at different band scores. The information is from IELTS\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ielts.org\/-\/media\/pdfs\/speaking-band-descriptors.ashx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">public scoring guide<\/a>, and \u201cband scores\u201d are what the IELTS calls different scores or levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><strong>Band score<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>What IELTS says<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>What IELTS means<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><tr><td>3<\/td><td>\u201cspeaks with long pauses\u201d<\/td><td>When you talk, you often stop for a long time (to think of the right words).<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>5<\/td><td>\u201cusually maintains flow of speech but uses repetition, self-correction and\/or slow speech to keep going\u201d<\/td><td>You are able to keep talking about a topic but you often repeat words and phrases, go back to fix your mistakes, and\/or speak at a slower pace in order to keep talking.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>7<\/td><td>\u201cspeaks at length without noticeable effort\u201d though \u201cmay demonstrate language-related hesitation at times, or some repetition and\/or self-correction\u201d<\/td><td>You are comfortable talking about a topic for a long time. However, you might sometimes need to stop talking to think of the right words, repeat yourself, or go back to fix your mistakes.&nbsp;<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>9<\/td><td>\u201cspeaks fluently with only rare repetition or self-correction; any hesitation is content-related rather than to find words or grammar\u201d<\/td><td>You are comfortable talking about a topic without going back to fix your mistakes or having to repeat yourself. You might stop talking sometimes to think about what ideas to express, but you don\u2019t stop talking just because you need time to think about how you want to express them.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>As you can see, examiners will pay attention to how often you pause, repeat words and phrases, correct yourself and slow down \u2013 basically any time you need to break the flow of your speech to think of the right words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Coherence\"><\/span>Coherence<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When you are \u201ccoherent,\u201d your ideas are connected and make sense together. This helps people follow your thinking and understand what you are trying to say. Being coherent is important because it helps you communicate your ideas clearly and effectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/ielts.idp.com\/prepare\/article-discourse-markers-ielts-speaking#what-is-a-discourse-marker\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">official IELTS website<\/a>, here are things examiners look for:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Do you use introductory and concluding phrases like \u201cfirst\u201d or \u201cfinally\u201d to guide your listeners through your thoughts?&nbsp;<\/li><li>Do you use phrases like \u201con the other hand\u201d or \u201cthat\u2019s why\u201d when you move from one thought to the next?<\/li><li>Do you organize your thoughts in a way that makes it easy for your listener to follow what you\u2019re saying?&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If so, you speak very coherently and will do well in this category! To give you a better understanding of what examiners will look for on the test, here\u2019s what IELTS\u2019s public scoring guide says about coherence at different band scores.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><strong>Band<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>What IELTS says<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>What IELTS means<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><tr><td>3<\/td><td>\u201chas limited ability to link simple sentences\u201d<\/td><td>You say a lot of simple sentences but don\u2019t connect them to each other.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>5<\/td><td>\u201cmay over-use certain connectives and discourse markers\u201d<\/td><td>You can use linking words to connect your thoughts but you may use the same ones too much.&nbsp;<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>7<\/td><td>\u201cuses a range of connectives and discourse markers with some flexibility\u201d<\/td><td>You are comfortable using a lot of different linking words to connect your thoughts.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>9<\/td><td>\u201cspeaks coherently with fully appropriate cohesive features\u201d and \u201cdevelops topics fully and appropriately\u201d<\/td><td>You are able to smoothly connect your thoughts with the right linking words. You also talk about different topics with a clear structure and provide relevant details about them.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>As you can see, you\u2019ll want to make sure you use linking words to connect your thoughts, and at higher band scores, you\u2019ll also want to be able to \u201cdevelop topics\u201d \u2013 we\u2019ll get into this later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_to_get_a_good_score\"><\/span>How to get a good score<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Tip_1_Learn_English_fillers\"><\/span>Tip # 1: Learn English fillers<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>At some point during your IELTS Speaking test, you will need to stop to think of the right word(s) to use. After all, even native English speakers sometimes do this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A natural and acceptable way to stop and think in English is to use \u201cfillers.\u201d These are phrases that help \u201cfill\u201d in the time when you\u2019re searching for the right words. Here are some that you can use on the IELTS:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Hmm \u2026<\/li><li>So \u2026&nbsp;<\/li><li>Well \u2026&nbsp;<\/li><li>Let me think \u2026&nbsp;<\/li><li>Let me see \u2026&nbsp;<\/li><li>That\u2019s a tricky question.<\/li><li>I haven\u2019t thought of that before.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, you don\u2019t want to use too many fillers. But using some fillers is still better than suddenly stopping, repeatedly saying \u201cahh \u2026 umm \u2026 huh \u2026,\u201d or using fillers from your native language!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Tip_2_Record_yourself_talking\"><\/span>Tip #2: Record yourself talking<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When you\u2019re talking, you may not realize how you sound, or what areas of your speech in English need the most improvement. You also may not realize how often you pause or have to correct yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, these are things that your examiner will notice and you need to know about them if you want to be able to improve them. Recording yourself is a good way to do this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Listen to your recordings and count the number of times you stop and think before you talk, go back to correct your mistakes or repeat yourself.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, check if you\u2019re talking too slowly or quickly. If you talk too slowly, the examiner may think you\u2019re not fluent, and if you talk too quickly, they may have trouble understanding you. In my country, most companies require you to speak fluent English to become a manager. That is also why I\u2019m taking this exam actually \u2013 I need to prove to future employers that I can speak English well.<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<p>In this response:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The words \u201cbecause\u201d and \u201cthis is why\u201d help Arif show the relationship between his thoughts.<\/li><li>The phrase \u201cfor better or worse\u201d helps him show how he feels about companies requiring English for managerial roles \u2013 he feels that this is reality, whether or not he likes it!<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In general, you should use linking words to help people follow the thoughts and feelings you are trying to express.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For IELTS, you need linking words to get a band score of 4 or higher. At a band score of 6, you are expected to use many different linking words, and at higher band scores, you\u2019ll be expected to use many different ones with few or no errors to express your ideas.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ll see linking words mentioned on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ielts.org\/-\/media\/pdfs\/speaking-band-descriptors.ashx\">IELTS\u2019 public scoring guide<\/a> as \u201cdiscourse markers,\u201d \u201ccohesive features,\u201d and \u201cconnectives.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You also need to make sure you use the right linking words or else you will confuse people. For example, \u201cI chose to learn English, but it can help me with my career\u201d is totally different from \u201cI chose to learn English, because it can help me with my career\u201d!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To get a higher score on the IELTS speaking test:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Learn a variety of linking words and practice using them.<\/li><li>Make sure you don\u2019t keep using the same linking words.<\/li><li>Make sure you understand how to use your linking words correctly.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>To get you started, here are some common English linking words you can use during your IELTS Speaking test.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><strong>Purpose<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>Linking words<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><tr><td>To talk about cause and effect<\/td><td>- As a result \u2026- That\u2019s why \u2026&nbsp;<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>To rephrase or clarify something you said<\/td><td>- In other words \u2026- What I mean is \u2026&nbsp;<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>To share examples<\/td><td>- For example \u2026&nbsp;- In particular \u2026<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>To show that you are surprised by something<\/td><td>- Surprisingly \u2026- Believe it or not \u2026<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>To learn more linking words, make sure to check out our <a href=\"https:\/\/engoo.com\/app\/materials\/ielts-speaking-test-preparation\/P6-s6hpMEemrUL__RArmKw\">IELTS Speaking course<\/a>. Each lesson has a \u201cUseful Language\u201d exercise which introduces useful linking words!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Tip_4_Develop_a_topic\"><\/span>Tip #4: Develop a topic<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Developing topics in a coherent way is necessary for scoring an 8 or above in the fluency and coherence category. But what does it mean to \u201cdevelop a topic\u201d?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Developing a topic means that you don\u2019t just share what you think about it. You also:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Explain your thinking: How much you need to explain depends on which part of the exam you\u2019re taking, but generally you should try to talk about a topic for <a href=\"https:\/\/ielts.idp.com\/saudiarabia\/prepare\/article-7-mistakes-ielts-speaking-test\/en-gb#:~:text=gauge%20before%20answering.-,Typically%20you%E2%80%99ll%20be%20required,same%20words%20or%20phrases,-Using%20the%20same\">two to six sentences<\/a>.<\/li><li>Present your thoughts in a way that is clear and easy for others to understand: This means you don\u2019t jump from idea to idea \u2013 instead, your ideas flow in a clear and easy-to-understand way.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>To give you an idea, here are two sample responses to the question \u201cWhy did you choose to learn English?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"unified-block unified-chat-bubble pos-left\"><div class=\"unified-chat-bubble-user\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.blog.engoo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2022\/09\/02024540\/avatar-51.png\" class=\"unified-chat-bubble-avatar\" width=\"50\" height=\"50\"><div class=\"unified-chat-bubble-name\">Pat<\/div><\/div><div class=\"unified-chat-bubble-content\"><div class=\"block-align-none\">Because I like it.<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Pat answers the question but does not develop the topic.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"unified-block unified-chat-bubble pos-left\"><div class=\"unified-chat-bubble-user\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.blog.engoo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2022\/09\/02024545\/avatar-48.jpeg\" class=\"unified-chat-bubble-avatar\" width=\"50\" height=\"50\"><div class=\"unified-chat-bubble-name\">Arif<\/div><\/div><div class=\"unified-chat-bubble-content\"><div class=\"block-align-none\">I chose to learn English because it can help me with my career. In my country, most companies require you to speak fluent English to become a manager. That is also why I\u2019m taking this exam actually \u2013 I need to prove to future employers that I can speak English well.<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Arif answers the question and develops the topic by sharing a reason (his career), some background information (companies require fluent English for manager roles), and an example (himself).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thanks to his logical and well-structured response, Arif will score a lot higher than Pat. So when you respond to an examiner\u2019s question, don\u2019t just answer it. Make sure to also explain your thinking with a clear structure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some common formats that you can use to structure your responses in a way that will help you develop the topic. The sample responses below are in response to the question \u201cDo you think everyone in your country should learn English?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><strong>Format<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>Sample responses<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Main idea + three supporting examples<\/td><td>\u201cI think everyone in my country should learn English because it is the most widely spoken language in the world. Knowing English will open up many opportunities for people, both personally and professionally. Additionally, many of the world's most popular movies and TV shows are in English, so if you want to be able to understand them, you will need to know the language. Finally, English is the primary language of the internet, so if you want to be able to access all of the information online, you will need to be able to read and understand English. \u201d<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Main idea + personal experience<\/td><td>\u201cI think everyone should learn English, because it is useful when communicating with people around the world. For example, I recently went to London on a business trip, and I was able to communicate with my colleagues and clients easily because we all spoke English.\u201d<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Opposing opinion + why you disagree<\/td><td>\u201cSo, some people in my country think that they don\u2019t need to learn English, because they don\u2019t need it in their everyday life. However, I disagree.
