You may first think of things like a box, or a room in a house or a building. However, time can also be thought of as space, and so can other things you cannot touch, such as emotions. This will be easier to understand once we look at a few examples.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"unified-block unified-sentences block-align-none\"><strong class=\"unified-sentences-title\">There's some yogurt in the fridge.<\/strong><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"unified-block unified-sentences block-align-none\"><strong class=\"unified-sentences-title\">They've got a big swimming pool in their backyard.<\/strong><\/div>\n\n\n<p>As we can see from these sentences, it is used for both three-dimensional spaces (the refrigerator) and for flat spaces (the yard).<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"unified-block unified-sentences block-align-none\"><strong class=\"unified-sentences-title\">I was born in 1971.<\/strong><\/div>\n\n\n<p>In this example, the space we are discussing is the time period of one particular year.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"unified-block unified-sentences block-align-none\"><strong class=\"unified-sentences-title\">Jenny is in love. She looks so happy.<\/strong><\/div>\n\n\n<p>This time, we are talking about the emotional \"space\" of love. However, just like with the previous preposition, this contact can be physical (like a location or vehicle) or figurative (such as \"belonging to\" something).<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"unified-block unified-sentences block-align-none\"><strong class=\"unified-sentences-title\">That's my dog on the bench over there.<\/strong><\/div>\n\n\n<p>The dog is resting on (contacting\/touching) the bench.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"unified-block unified-sentences block-align-none\"><strong class=\"unified-sentences-title\">Sorry, I can't talk now. Let's look at this in action through some example sentences.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"unified-block unified-sentences block-align-none\"><strong class=\"unified-sentences-title\">She's waiting for us at the entrance.<\/strong><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Compare this with a similar sentence: \"She's waiting for us in the lobby.\" The lobby is a bigger area, but \"entrance\" is a more specific point, so we use \"at.\"<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"unified-block unified-sentences block-align-none\"><strong class=\"unified-sentences-title\">I'm really busy at the moment.<\/strong><\/div>\n\n\n<p>\"At the moment\" is another way of saying \"right now.\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Other_examples-3\"><\/span><strong>Other examples<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 at the restaurant<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 at 5:30 p.m.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 the doctor's office<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 at 100\u00ba<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So instead of spaces or surfaces, think of \"at\" as a way to refer to points.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Indicating_locations\"><\/span><strong>Indicating locations<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Next, let's focus on using these prepositions to talk about places.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>At is used to describe places that are generally small or more detailed (at home, at my desk, at the bus stop)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In describes large places or places for which there is only one (in Canada, in the bag, in his room)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>On is used to describe something contacting a surface (on the table, on the second floor, on my shoulder)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, \"at home\" treats home as a point on a map, not the inside of the house. \"In his room,\" on the other hand, focuses on the interior space, not on the room's location.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"unified-block unified-sentences block-align-none\"><strong class=\"unified-sentences-title\">Can you meet me at the front gate after school?<\/strong><\/div>\n\n\n<p>The meeting place is a very specific location.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"unified-block unified-sentences block-align-none\"><strong class=\"unified-sentences-title\">He is one of the most famous singers in Japan. <\/strong><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Here, Japan is a large, unique place, and the speaker is referencing singers within the country.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"unified-block unified-sentences block-align-none\"><strong class=\"unified-sentences-title\">The book you wanted to borrow is on my desk.<\/strong><\/div>\n\n\n<p>The book is in contact with the surface of the desk, so we use \"on.\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Expressing_time\"><\/span><strong>Expressing time<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When expressing time, the difference between these words depends on the length of time you are describing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>At is used for specific times (at 3 o'clock, at noon, at that time)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>On describes dates and days of the week (on Monday, on Christmas Eve, on May 3)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In indicates a period of time, not only one point (in 2019, in winter, in 5 years)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>So going from the shortest amount of time to the longest, the order is: at &lt; on &lt; in&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"unified-block unified-sentences block-align-none\"><strong class=\"unified-sentences-title\">My grandmother called me at 11 a.m.<\/strong><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"unified-block unified-sentences block-align-none\"><strong class=\"unified-sentences-title\">I won't be at work on April 5.<\/strong><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"unified-block unified-sentences block-align-none\"><strong class=\"unified-sentences-title\">We are planning to move overseas in 2026.<\/strong><\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Wrap-up\"><\/span><strong>Wrap-up<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>No matter who you are speaking to or why you are studying English, understanding these three prepositions is very important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Don't worry if the small differences are confusing to you now; you will gradually begin to sense their proper usage the more you listen to and speak English yourself.
