English-speakers use tons of <a href=\"https:\/\/engoo.com\/app\/words\/word\/abbreviation\/gp4VqNYLEeiCO_M26t6XzA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">abbreviations<\/a> and acronyms in everyday life, and many have a longer history than you\u2019d think.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are five useful ones that have withstood the test of time. These will probably be used forever, so make sure you learn them today!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"1_PS\"><\/span>1. P.S.<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The abbreviation \u201cP.S.\u201d dates back to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/postscript#:~:text=More-,first%20known%20use%20of%20postscript,-1551\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the 16th century<\/a>. It stands for \u201cpostscript,\u201d which means \u201cwritten\u201d (\u201cpost\u201d) and \u201cafter\u201d (\u201cscript\u201d). P.S. traditionally refers to text <em>written after<\/em> a signature on a letter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"607\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.blog.engoo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2021\/07\/13200159\/image.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-680\" srcset=\"https:\/\/assets.blog.engoo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2021\/07\/13200159\/image.jpeg 800w, https:\/\/assets.blog.engoo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2021\/07\/13200159\/image-300x228.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/assets.blog.engoo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2021\/07\/13200159\/image-768x583.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption>P.S. used in a letter from a soldier fighting in World War I<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>These days, people continue to use P.S. in emails and text messages, usually without the periods (\u201cPS\u201d). Even if the writer of an email or text message does not sign their name, they might still use P.S. to mark an afterthought.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Hey Sarah, great catching up today. <strong>PS<\/strong> Here\u2019s the Youtube video I was telling you about.<\/li><li>Hi Drew, I\u2019ll be there on Sunday. <strong>PS<\/strong> You won\u2019t believe what happened to me today.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Some people use P.S. by itself, while others use it with a colon (\u201cPS:\u201d), a dash (\u201cPS-\u201d), or a period (\u201cPS.\u201d).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2_RSVP\"><\/span>2. RSVP<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cRSVP\u201d is an abbreviation that comes from the French phrase \u201cR\u00e9pondez s'il vous pla\u00eet,\u201d which means \u201cPlease respond.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It has been used in English <a href=\"https:\/\/wordhistories.net\/2017\/12\/16\/origin-of-rsvp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">since the 19th century<\/a> and was traditionally written \u201cR.S.V.P.\u201d People wrote it at the bottom of invitation letters to request a response.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These days, you will see RSVP used on physical invitation cards as well as online invitations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/1cY91gL706isDBQVVbLYMH7CUmk-_MB2fwnCxRJOu2dIE2uHc2bSPuRc_WTZM8_dSDPWwZYzarS8kMr5eUylzHInjAwYturvtCxsw_JjhhlHJroHaByk0lYaQzQ4RF_m0yUWBx3a\" alt=\"RSVP card\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ll also hear people say \u201cRSVP\u201d in real life.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Make sure to <strong>RSVP<\/strong> for the event by this Thursday!<\/li><li>Dan sends out holiday party invitations early so guests have enough time to <strong>RSVP<\/strong>.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>RSVP is also used as a noun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Attendance is free, and an <strong>RSVP<\/strong> is not required.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_OMG\"><\/span>3. R.I.P.<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>R.I.P. stands for \u201crest in peace\u201d and has been written on Christian gravestones for centuries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In informal contexts, you\u2019ll often see \u201cRIP\u201d (without periods). For example, when someone passes away, you will usually see people use \u201cRIP\u201d before their name. For example, someone might sign off a letter with \u201cLove, Jane xx.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Happy Sunday!!! How\u2019s everyone doing? Xx <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/QbdCptWo9x\">pic.twitter.com\/QbdCptWo9x<\/a><\/p>\u2014 Jeannine Barry (@Jeannine_Barry) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Jeannine_Barry\/status\/1366044592626401287?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 28, 2021<\/a><\/blockquote> <script async=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n\n\n\n<p>The association between X\u2019s and kisses is believed to come from a common practice in the Middle Ages. A scholar explains in the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/national\/religion\/sealed-with-a-kiss-the-religious-history-of-x-and-o-commentary\/2015\/02\/12\/12f22b98-b2e4-11e4-bf39-5560f3918d4b_story.html#:~:text=Christians-,Once%20it%20was%20a,sealed%20with%20a%20kiss,-Symbols\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Washington Post<\/em><\/a> that illiterate people would often sign documents with an X and then kiss their \u201csignature\u201d to show that they are serious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Eventually, X\u2019s became a symbol for kisses themselves. For example, the Oxford English Dictionary quotes an 1894 letter by Winston Churchill, where he wrote: \u201cPlease excuse bad writing as I am in an awful hurry. (Many kisses.) xxx WSC.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This practice remains common among Brits. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.seattletimes.com\/explore\/shop-northwest\/xx-why-is-everyone-signing-their-emails-with-kisses\/#:~:text=By%202014,instant%20messages\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2014 survey<\/a> of nearly 600 people, aged 15 to 71 and 90% living in the UK, found that \u201c95 percent of them used \u2018xx\u2019 in text messages, emails, and instant messages.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Often X\u2019s are used to make a text message more friendly. For example, \u201cOK xx\u201d and \u201con my way xx\u201d sound more friendly than simply \u201cOK\u201d or \u201con my way.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Sorry, I have no idea! xx<\/li><li>Thanks anyways xx<\/li><li>Could you transfer me the money when you can? xx<\/li><li>Get well soon! xx<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Just be careful about using X\u2019s with people from other English-speaking countries.
