contraction: it is a short form of \u201cthey are.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Use this when referring to at least two people or things, or to a person whose gender is unknown or <a href=\"https:\/\/engoo.com\/app\/words\/word\/nonbinary\/tOamvPjJRv62o2Ko6CGZ6Q\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">nonbinary<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"unified-block unified-sentences block-align-none\"><strong class=\"unified-sentences-title\">They\u2019re all in elementary school.<\/strong><div class=\"unified-sentences-content\">> <strong>They are<\/strong> all in elementary school.<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"unified-block unified-sentences block-align-none\"><strong class=\"unified-sentences-title\">They\u2019re five dollars each.<\/strong><div class=\"unified-sentences-title\">Ask Dee if they're coming to the party.<\/strong><div class=\"unified-sentences-content\">> Ask Dee if <strong>they are<\/strong> coming to the party.<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Using the other two words would result in strange, incorrect sentences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><s>There all in middle school.<\/s><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><s>Their five dollars each.<\/s><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><s>Ask Dee if there coming to the party.<\/s><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Their\"><\/span><strong>Their<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" favorite team\" class=\"wp-image-5804\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTheir\u201d is a determiner and indicates possession. So similar to \u201chis,\u201d \u201cher,\u201d \u201cmy\u201d and \"your,\" it means that something belongs to someone. In this case, it is the possessive form of \"they.\" Let\u2019s look at some examples.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"unified-block unified-sentences block-align-none\"><strong class=\"unified-sentences-title\">Jenny and John have really good taste; <strong>their<\/strong> home is beautiful.<\/strong><div class=\"unified-sentences-content\">Their = Jenny and John's<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"unified-block unified-sentences block-align-none\"><strong class=\"unified-sentences-title\">My two dogs love playing with this piece of string. It\u2019s definitely their favorite toy.<\/strong><div class=\"unified-sentences-content\">Their = My two dogs'<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"unified-block unified-sentences block-align-none\"><strong class=\"unified-sentences-title\">As the soccer fans began to cheer, their voices filled the stadium.<\/strong><div class=\"unified-sentences-content\">Their = The soccer fans'<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<p>It is also the possessive form of \"they\" referring to a person who is not called a he or a she.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"unified-block unified-sentences block-align-none\"><strong class=\"unified-sentences-title\">Syd loves karaoke. Their singing voice is amazing.<\/strong><div class=\"unified-sentences-content\">Their = Syd's<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s look at two of these examples using the other words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><s>Jenny and John have really good taste; there home is amazing.<\/s><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><s>As the soccer fans began to cheer, they\u2019re voices filled the stadium.<\/s><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These are incorrect!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"There\"><\/span><strong>There<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.blog.engoo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2024\/01\/31074100\/there_neal-e-johnson-eBSfm9H1Nlc-unsplash1-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"A car loaded with several suitcases driving through a rural area with mountains in the distance\" class=\"wp-image-5806\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, there is \u201cthere.\u201d This word refers to a place or location that is far from the speaker. It is the opposite of \u201chere.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It will take us about an hour to get <strong>there<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Paris? Yes, I went <strong>there<\/strong> last year.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>There\u2019s<\/strong> the restroom, next to the check-in counter.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It is often used together with \u201cover,\u201d especially when the subject of the sentence isn't close.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Your keys are <strong>over there<\/strong> on the counter.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>When used with the verb \u201cto be,\u201d it indicates that something exists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>There<\/strong> <strong>is<\/strong> a great bar just around the corner from my office.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Paul said <strong>there was<\/strong> no movie theater in this town, but <strong>there is<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s switch this word with the others we're exploring in this article.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><s>It will take us about an hour to get their.<\/s><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><s>Your keys are over they're on the counter.<\/s><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><s>Their is a great bar just around the corner from my office.<\/s><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Again, these sentences are incorrect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Wrap-Up\"><\/span><strong>Wrap-Up<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When you see them used properly, the purpose of each of these three words should be clear. Keep these differences in mind and you will understand them in conversations even though they sound the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Be extra careful when writing, however.
