But what makes them different? And do they mean the same thing as <a href=\"https:\/\/engoo.com\/blog\/language-tips\/me-too-and-neither-do-i-a-quick-guide-to-agreements\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cMe too\u201d<\/a>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This article will explain them in detail so you can use them yourself in your own English conversations!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">So ... I\u201d phrases with \u201cMe too.\u201d They mean the same thing and are both used in formal and casual English.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But how do these phrases mean the same thing? Well, \u201cso\u201d is a word English speakers often use to avoid repeating things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just think about phrases like \u201cI think so.\u201d If someone asks \"Do you think it will be hot today?\", it's simpler to reply with \"I think so\" than \"I think it will be hot today.\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The same applies when you\u2019re agreeing with the statement \u201cI love spicy food.\u201d Instead of saying \u201cI love spicy food too,\u201d you can simply say \u201cSo do I.\u201d\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_is_%E2%80%9CI%E2%80%9D_at_the_End_of_the_Sentence\"><\/span>Why is \u201cI\u201d at the End of the Sentence?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You probably learned that English sentences start with the subject. So why is \u201cI\u201d at the end of \u201cSo \u2026 I\u201d?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This probably isn\u2019t the first time you\u2019re seeing normal English sentence structure inverted (switched around). For example, when you ask someone \u201cWhere are you?\u201d that\u2019s also an inversion of normal sentence structure (\u201cYou are \u2026 \u201d).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The process for inverting sentences for \u201cSo \u2026 \u201c is similar to the process of inverting a sentence to change it into a question. If the verb in the sentence is \u201cto be\u201d or a <a href=\"https:\/\/engoo.com\/app\/lessons\/grammar-grammar-he-can-cook-almost-any-dish\/9xRpwmHSEeeUe8On7FEMLA?category_id=6r1fXsYHEeimuzOlcF_9gA&amp;course_id=1llXaMYPEeiWI9-YoYwf4A\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">modal verb<\/a>, keep it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>I <strong>am<\/strong> busy. \u2192 So <strong>am<\/strong> I.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I <strong>can<\/strong> speak English. \u2192 So <strong>can <\/strong>I.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I <strong>will<\/strong> be there. \u2192 So <strong>will <\/strong>I.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If I won the lottery, I <strong>would<\/strong> buy a <a href=\"https:\/\/engoo.com\/app\/words\/word\/mansion\/zga0ELstQmCjlQAAAEf0tg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">mansion<\/a>. \u2192 So <strong>would <\/strong>I.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If the sentence contains some other verb, simply replace it with \u201cdo.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>I <strong>love<\/strong> spicy food. \u2192 So <strong>do <\/strong>I.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I <strong>go<\/strong> jogging every day. \u2192 So <strong>do <\/strong>I.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I <strong>eat<\/strong> a lot for breakfast. \u2192 So <strong>do <\/strong>I.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I <strong>have<\/strong> twenty dollars in my pocket. \u2192 So <strong>do<\/strong> I.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Just make sure to pay attention to verb tense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>I <strong>loved<\/strong> spicy food when I was a kid. \u2192 So <strong>did <\/strong>I.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I<strong>\u2019ve<\/strong> been sick recently. \u2192 So <strong>have <\/strong>I.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"When_to_Use_%E2%80%9CSo_%E2%80%A6_I%E2%80%9D_Instead_of_%E2%80%9CMe_Too%E2%80%9D\"><\/span>When to Use \u201cSo \u2026 I\u201d Instead of \u201cMe Too\u201d<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.blog.engoo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2021\/09\/20070811\/so_am_i-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Two people having a conversation while sitting in front of a large window\" class=\"wp-image-10559\" srcset=\"https:\/\/assets.blog.engoo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2021\/09\/20070811\/so_am_i-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/assets.blog.engoo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2021\/09\/20070811\/so_am_i-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/assets.blog.engoo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2021\/09\/20070811\/so_am_i-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/assets.blog.engoo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2021\/09\/20070811\/so_am_i-420x280.jpg 420w, https:\/\/assets.blog.engoo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2021\/09\/20070811\/so_am_i-840x560.jpg 840w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>You might be wondering when you should use \u201cSo \u2026 I'' instead of \u201cMe too.\u201d After all, \u201cMe too\u201d is simpler and means the same thing, so it makes sense to use it whenever you can, right?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Well, there are two situations when \u201cMe too\u201d <em>can\u2019t<\/em> be used.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"1_As_part_of_a_longer_sentence\"><\/span>1. As part of a longer sentence<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Unlike \u201cMe too,\u201d \u201cSo do I\u201d can be part of a longer sentence. For example, if you wanted to combine the sentences \u201cJay likes dogs\u201d and \u201cI like dogs too,\u201d you could say one of the following:\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Jay likes dogs, and <strong>so do I<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Jay likes dogs, and <strong>I do too<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The sentence \"Jay likes dogs and me too,\" however, sounds unnatural. In addition, it's unclear because it could mean something different: \u201cJay likes dogs and he likes me too.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2_With_other_pronouns\"><\/span>2. With other pronouns<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>While the phrase \u201cMe too\u201d is very convenient, it only works for the pronoun \u201cme.\u201d You can\u2019t say \u201cHe too\u201d or \u201cThey too.\u201d Instead, you\u2019ll either need to include a verb (\u201cHe <em>does<\/em> too.\u201d) or use the \u201cSo + [verb] + [pronoun]\u201d structure.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Jay likes dogs, and <strong>my sister does too<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Jay likes dogs, and <strong>so does my sister<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some more examples:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>I\u2019ve been to China before, and <strong>so has<\/strong> my sister.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I can speak Italian. <strong>So can<\/strong> my friend Bill.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I'm hungry, and <strong>so are<\/strong> they.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A: I think that\u2019s a great idea. \/ B: <strong>So do<\/strong> we.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Responding_to_%E2%80%9CI_Love_You%E2%80%9D\"><\/span><strong>Responding to &#8220;I Love You.&#8221;<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>One important thing to remember when using these phrases is the correct way to respond when talking about loving another person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If someone says that they love pizza, for example, you can say either \"Me too\" or \"So do I\" to agree.
