This time, we\u2019ll focus on a related topic: common English words for prices.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just like for money slang, some of these expressions can be very colorful and creative, so non-native speakers may need some explanation to understand them. Of course, this is not always the price a store will try to sell it for, but it is the starting point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <strong>MSRP<\/strong> is $29.99.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>British English uses RRP (for \"Recommended Retail Price\") instead of MSRP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You may also see or hear \u201clist price,\u201d which has the same meaning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>This store usually sells items at a little below the <strong>list price<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Sticker_price\"><\/span><strong>Sticker price<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This simply refers to the price of an item displayed on a sticker attached to it. This expression can be used even if there isn\u2019t actually a sticker on the item.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Everything is on sale for 20% off the <strong>sticker price<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The term \"sticker shock\" describes the feeling of surprise when discovering an item's high price.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>I experienced a lot of <strong>sticker shock<\/strong> when I was on vacation overseas. Everything was so expensive!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Sticker shock<\/strong> due to <a href=\"https:\/\/engoo.com\/app\/daily-news\/article\/never-understood-inflation-heres-your-101\/-Fj0skZNEe-qGevoU7GYMw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">inflation<\/a> is keeping many customers away from stores.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Asking_price\"><\/span><strong>Asking price<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This term is often used in private sales rather than in stores. The \"asking price\" is what the seller of an item would like to sell it for \u2014 however, they are open to negotiation and it is possible for them to sell it at a lower price.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If the <strong>asking price<\/strong> is too high, make me an offer.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>*\"Make (me) an offer\" is a common expression in casual negotiations. It means the seller is willing to <a href=\"https:\/\/engoo.com\/blog\/language-tips\/think-synonyms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">consider<\/a> an amount suggested by the customer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Haggle\"><\/span><strong>Haggle<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\"Haggle\" is a casual word that is used in the same way as the verb \"bargain\" (explained below).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>My uncle is great at <strong>haggling<\/strong>, so he never pays full price.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Low_prices\"><\/span><strong>Low prices<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.blog.engoo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2024\/10\/04021530\/prices_english_1-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"A black 50% off price tag being held up by someone\" class=\"wp-image-9763\" srcset=\"https:\/\/assets.blog.engoo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2024\/10\/04021530\/prices_english_1-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/assets.blog.engoo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2024\/10\/04021530\/prices_english_1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/assets.blog.engoo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2024\/10\/04021530\/prices_english_1-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/assets.blog.engoo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2024\/10\/04021530\/prices_english_1-420x280.jpg 420w, https:\/\/assets.blog.engoo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2024\/10\/04021530\/prices_english_1-840x560.jpg 840w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Let's move on to words and expressions related to prices that are low (or at least not too high!).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"FairReasonable\"><\/span><strong>Fair\/Reasonable<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Both of these adjectives describe prices that are good but not great. So if you feel a price is at the right level to give good value for money, these words would be appropriate to use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>After some negotiation, we agreed on a price we both thought was <strong>fair<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>These prices are pretty <strong>reasonable<\/strong> for what you get. I think you should buy it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Bargain\"><\/span><strong>Bargain<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In contrast to the two words above, a \u201cbargain\u201d is a price that offers excellent value for money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>This TV was a real <strong>bargain<\/strong>; I got it for much cheaper than the list price.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The store has plenty of <strong>bargains<\/strong> for customers who arrive early on the day of the sale.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You can also use \u201cbargain\u201d as a verb when negotiating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If you don\u2019t like the prices in the market, you can <strong>bargain<\/strong> with the sellers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"A_steal\"><\/span><strong>A steal<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\"Steal\" is mainly used as a verb for the action of taking property that belongs to someone else. As a noun, however, a \"steal\" is a deal that is so good it's almost as if you stole the item instead of paying for it!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>This bag was an absolute <strong>steal<\/strong>. I got it at a going-out-of-business sale.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Dirt_cheap\"><\/span><strong>Dirt cheap<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Something that is \"dirt cheap\" has a very low price. In fact, it's almost as cheap as dirt!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>These headphones were <strong>dirt cheap<\/strong>, but the sound quality is really bad. I guess I shouldn't be surprised.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Rock-bottom\"><\/span><strong>Rock-bottom<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Advertisers may use the adjective phrase \"rock-bottom\" to describe prices at their lowest point possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Come down to the dealership today to see our selection of cars at <strong>rock-bottom<\/strong> prices!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>(By the way, when Hollywood star Dwayne \"The Rock\" Johnson was a professional wrestler, one of his famous techniques was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=QtchORHKY0c\">\"The Rock Bottom\"<\/a>!)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"High_prices\"><\/span><strong>High prices<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.blog.engoo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2024\/10\/04021655\/prices_english_2-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"A smiling salesman in a car dealership reaching out to shake hands\" class=\"wp-image-9764\" srcset=\"https:\/\/assets.blog.engoo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2024\/10\/04021655\/prices_english_2-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/assets.blog.engoo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2024\/10\/04021655\/prices_english_2-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/assets.blog.engoo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2024\/10\/04021655\/prices_english_2-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Reasonable prices are great, but not everything is affordable. When prices go higher, here are some words you can use to talk about them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"PriceySpendy\"><\/span><strong>Pricey\/Spendy<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>These two words are casual alternatives for \"expensive.\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Those trendy restaurants are pretty <strong>pricey<\/strong>. I wonder if the food is any good.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>That store is a bit too <strong>spendy<\/strong> for me, so I shop at the discount store instead.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Exorbitant\"><\/span><strong>Exorbitant<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This word describes prices that are not just high, they're <em>un<\/em>reasonable. It has a very negative nuance and suggests that the seller is not doing business fairly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Many customers accused grocery stores of charging <strong>exorbitant<\/strong> prices for food in the years since the coronavirus pandemic.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Gouge\"><\/span><strong>Gouge<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When companies and private sellers know that customers have few options for where to buy items, they sometimes try to take advantage of the situation by selling things at prices much higher than normal. In these cases, we say that they are \"gouging\" customers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Some ticket resellers try to <strong>gouge<\/strong> customers on tickets to sold-out events.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"An_arm_and_a_leg\"><\/span><strong>An arm and a leg<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This idiom suggests that a price is so high that you have to pay in body parts instead of money! So something that \"costs an arm and a leg\" is extremely expensive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>That famous restaurant serves incredible meals, but you have to pay <strong>an arm and a leg<\/strong> to eat there!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>He tried to charge me <strong>an arm and a leg<\/strong>, so I canceled the deal.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Rip-off\"><\/span><strong>Rip-off<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\"Rip-off\" can describe either a price or an item\/service. In both cases, the price is much too high compared to the value the item or service provides. Like \"exorbitant,\" it also acts as an insult to the seller.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Twenty-five dollars? That's a <strong>rip-off<\/strong>; it's only $12 at the store down the street.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It can also be used when the price was fair, but the item is broken or somehow different than what the buyer was promised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>This hair dryer broke one week after I bought it. What a <strong>rip-off<\/strong>!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\"Rip off\" (with no hyphen) is also a phrasal verb for the action of tricking or <a href=\"https:\/\/engoo.com\/app\/words\/word\/deceive\/zga0ELstQmCjlQAAAAAg1g\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">deceiving<\/a> someone in a sale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The car repair shop tried to <strong>rip me off<\/strong> by selling me parts for my car that I didn't actually need.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>There's still more to discuss about this term! It is <em>also<\/em> used to refer to an unofficial item that copies a similar product from a well-known company.
